DescriptionTo finish off what has been an impromptu week of New Titans art postings, I figured I'd post the first page splash that comes immediately ahead of the 2nd page title splash I posted yesterday. The New Titans and Team Titans have all just returned from a beach vacation in Hawaii and on this first page of the issue we see Garfield, in the form of a monkey, riding atop Baby Wildebeest, who is being used as a carrier for everyone's luggage, waxing nostalgic for all the beautiful babes he just spent time seeing. I really dig the design Grummett came up with for Baby Wildebeest and the combination of his pencils with Vey's inks here is really quite fabulous. As a point of interest for those of you with keener eyes who've been reading the descriptions of my last few posts, here again we find an example of a page on which Al Vey had to carefully balance making the editors happy by inking "in the Image style", while still doing it his way. He used Image styled rendering on all the metal parts of Baby Wildebeest's costume, while using his natural style on everything else. What a crazy time it must've been to be working in the industry at this time if you WEREN'T an Image styled artist. They were all being told "Do it like they do it or we won't be able to give you any more work!". Insane..... Social/Sharing |

I loved baby wildbeest as a humorous concept as well as his design. What a great splash!

Hawaii doesn't need a super team. They already have Max Holloway, he can handle whatever superhero's come their way.

Yeah, and BJ out in Hilo, he of the 0-7 record over the past 10 years and 1-9-1 record in the last 11 years, with his only win coming again a then already over the hill Matt Hughes and today just a smidgen above a .500 career win percentage? Then there's that killer, Kendall Grove. Oh and how about Yancy Medeiros, he of the 0-4 record in his last 4? Hmmm, on second thought, Hawaii could use the Titans!

BJ was a beast. Even Batman gonna get roughed up if he keeps at it to long. You missed Brad Taveres and I always have a soft spot for Spider.

I actually didn't miss Brad, it just wasn't worth mentioning an average middling fighter. BJ was NOT a beast. That's just a false narrative that the MMA media created to hype him up because after he is thought to be the fastest earner of a legit black belt in history & became the first non-Brazilian to win the black-belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. It was earning that black belt so quickly that earned him the nickname Prodigy, but the media carried that over to MMA and made everyone believe he was an MMA prodigy. He wasn't. He had a few great fights early on, but with the benefit of hindsight, history shows a completely different story, with perhaps only 3 of his early wins being against truly great competition. When all is said and done, he was an average to decent MMA fighter with tons of potential which he squandered due to being lazy and undisciplined. I could go on forever, but this is a comic art site, not MMA, so I'll leave it here.

It's a great splash, but the camera around Baby Wildebeest's neck is the icing on the cake. The Image-style copycats of the day would never have included something like that!

Beast boy at any time could have turned into a gorilla and handled the samsonite himself. He's just hazing baby. If they could have relaunched with a number one with this style, the title could have Imaged up for a while.

A fantastic topper to your week of wonderful Titans pieces! Just curious…If Baby Wildebeest is this gargantuan, what does Adolescent Wildebeest look like? And Fully-Grown Wildebeest????

I guess the Image Style is pretty shiny. I prefer the other parts. Grummett had a good sense of artistic humor, imo. A lot of his splashy images made me smile and/or chuckle, like his fun Superboy covers. I really like the overloaded image with the bespectacled monkey riding on top. It's fun, while still being so detailed and crisp, as he does. Very nice. Congrats!
