DescriptionJust like New Titans #93 p.05 that I posted in this gallery back in late August, this splash once again offered Grummett and Vey the opportunity to showcase Starfire in civilian guise, wearing a knockout dress and high heeled boots!For those of you reading the dialogue and wondering, it's being spoken by Dark Raven, seen hiding up in the rafters of the club in the final panel. This page, coming from the "Ink it like the Image guys do!" era of comics, is an interesting snapshot into that time and it speaks volumes about how artists felt about being pressured to do that. On the one hand, no artist ever wants to be told to draw like someone else, but on the other hand they also knew their livelihoods were on the line if they didn't give their editors what they were demanding. Al Vey clearly struggled with this dilemma, so he compromised by only inking some of each page the Image way and other parts in his usual style. On this page, you can clearly see that he took out his resentment on the throwaway male character as well as the art in the inset panel, while inking the Starfire money shot primarily in his own style. I can only imagine the level of pressure that veteran artists were being put under during this time.... Social/Sharing |

The pathos of these artists screams through your description. :) And it really adds a fun dimension when I look back and see what you mean. Vey's style is much better, imo. Agreed. That shot of Starfire is gorgeous. Love her hair, and her expression. Lucky guy. Just for the moment, though, clearly. But I'd take it :) Great point around inking at the time...I'll have to ask about that at cons! Congrats!

Another great Grummett Starfire page! But, then, does he ever do a "bad" Starfire page? Come to think of it, is there such a thing as a "bad" Starfire page? Probably not. Oh, by the way, thanks for draining the supply of Grummett art just a bit more so the rest of us have less! Nice going, Ruben!! All joking aside, congrats on another great page for your collection! And, i definitely see what you mean by the Image inking style forced on the artists of that time. Not a fan of it myself but, that's why there's chocolate and vanilla!

Great page. Love the money shot.. and have to say, after reading your comments.. that to me the inking feels pretty consistent o. The page. As a fan of the image stuff.. I really don't feel that effect here at all.. but would admit am not super knowledgeable about the inkers natural style. All in all.. just another wonderful page. Congrats!

Nice description. I am of the Image style sucked camp. Too much stiffly steroidal posing. Too much unnecessary detail. Glad it ended. I can well imagine how much many artists hated working in it. This page is a good compromise and is nice but it would have looked even better if the artists had freedom.

Another great Starfire image! Maybe it's because I didn't start reading the Titans until 1989 and therefore missed the golden era of Wolfman and Perez, but when I think Starfire, I think of Grummett's work on the character.

It must have been incredibly stressful to be an inker during this period of time, but I agree, Al Vey struck a very good compromise with this page. Starfire looks oh so scrumptious!
