DescriptionFor some reason I've long since forgotten or perhaps never even knew, all the mainstream DC superhero titles cover dated December 1997 had covers which specifically featured only a closeup of the main character's head. Most artists stuck to this seemingly boring editorial idea, but I do remember at least a couple of artists who tried to make the idea a bit less boring and doing something a bit different than everyone else. One of those was Jeff Matsuda, who drew Bart blowing a raspberry at the viewer on the cover of Impulse, and this one by Grummett, which owing to Superboy's playfulness, has him upside down with a big, shit eating smile on his face. The reason I loved this character so much is that he was portrayed as an immature teenager who had tremendous power but was still not really ready to use it, all the while being cocky and overconfident, usually making jokes and insults against his foes while in the midst of battle. If that reminds you of a certain wall crawling web slinger, I can't fault you for that. While simple and straightforward, this cover image perfectly captures the FUN that this character embodied! By the way, this was Grummett's 2nd drawn cover for this issue. The first one was rejected, and I own the original which you can see in this same gallery room. Social/Sharing |

I believe that anybody who read that serie will agree it was a fun one.
I've been trying to get a cover from it myself with no luck lately, so congrats ;)

Very fun and not all artists can pull off the closeup headshot. Perfect addition, Ruben!

Sweet cover, Ruben. I think I still prefer the unpublished cover. Lol

When all the covers for that month came out, it was really impressive to see on the racks. Everybody thought it was stupid when we saw the sollicitations in the Previews, but the marketing ploy worked.
Congrats on the cover!

Cool pair of covers! Hard to pick, but I think I prefer the upside down goofiness ;)

Really like this cover! Happy to see other collectors go all in with Grummett like I did:) His art is so distinctive and nostalgic!
