DescriptionAs many of you know, I love the work of Tom Grummett and I love his version of Superboy, because he looked cool and behaved a lot like Peter Parker, joking and making fun of his foes while in the midst of battle. This character brought the FUN back to me at a time when I found comics had lost it completely. So here we have a fun image of Superboy saving people and pets from a fly away car, and I really dig that guy barely hanging onto the logo. As always, I just love the beautiful, clean lines Grummett laid down here. Fun Fact: I bought this cover from Tom many years ago, sold it, then bought it back years later. When I first got it from Tom, he told me before showing me a scan that it wasn't inked and mentioned there was a long story behind it. If you look at the date he signed, it was drawn in the year 2000, and as it turned out the "story" behind it not being inked but still being published was simply that they were running up to the deadline and didn't have time for Tom to FedEx the cover to Karl Kesel for inking. But they figured out a way to not ship it yet still make the deadline. It turned out that Kesel's printer allowed for 11 x 17 images to be printed out in only non-repro blue ink, so he did that and then inked over that copy of the pencils. Yes, ladies and germs, it turns out that this is on of the earliest published covers drawn on one board while inked over blueline on another board. So the process, while still feeling new to many collectors, is already at least 20 years old! Social/Sharing |

Luckily there was no time for FedEx because Tom's pencilwork is beautiful!

Love the story Ruben! Just shows you how resourceful artists can be when it comes to deadlines.
Great Superboy cover!

The image looks simple, but those angles! The Superboy must have been tough to work out, and the simple overlaps here and there with all of the different character's angles really give the scene depth and add chaos. Nice subtle artistry to make this cover image pop. Very nice! Congrats

"WASUUPP?!" indeed. Reminds me of a girl I knew in college who, if you asked her "What's up?", she'd say "Oh, the sky, the clouds, the moon ..." In the case of this cover, the answer would be "Oh, a car, a fire hydrant, a trash can, a dog, some people..." Love the dog by the way. Definitely my favorite, along with the guy hanging onto the logo. By the way, when someone asks me "What's up?" I usually say "Not my IQ."

That's a fun one :)
A Grummett Superboy cover is a goal of mine as well.

I really like how Tom has the art interact with the logo. Would be nice to find the inked cover and add an overlay to show the results.
