DescriptionI always saw this version of Superboy as DC's answer to Peter Parker. A fun-loving teenager, confident enough in his powers and abilities to make wisecracks and throw insults at his foes in the midst of battle.I still clearly remember what my first thought was that came to mind when I saw this cover for the first time: "What the hell?!? Is that the Creeper?". In the end, it turned out not to be the Creeper, just some random, nerd who worked at his dad's store selling Superboy merch and was overtaken by some alien spores which gave him the ability to change into different people. In the opening scene, jealous of all the female attention Superboy is getting on the beach, he decides to turn into an overgrown, buffoonish meathead in order to steal attention away from Superboy. The strange thing is, in the story, he only slightly resembles the guy drawn on the cover, in 2 panels, when he begins losing control of his power and his large, muscular meathead appearance shrinks and looks goofy, before finally reverting back to his normal self. In any case, I originally disliked this cover because I I really wanted the weirdo on the surfboard to be the Creeper having some fun in the sun in Hawaii, but I later learned to appreciate it just for how goofy the guy looks and because I realized it actually suited the fun and comedic tone of the book. Fun cover and same feeling for me: I thought it was the Creeper at first and didn't like it too much originally. I now do as the Superboy figure is strong. Congrats.

Hah! That's so funny, Fred! I'm so glad you said that because I thought for sure everyone was going to say "The Creeper? That doesn't look like The Creeper!"

Crazy cool! The character on the surfboard looks a little like an Ed "Big Daddy" Roth creation!

That didn't even occur to me, Bill, but now that you've mentioned it, I absolutely see it!

Spider-man! I never even noticed before, but you're 100% correct. The irreverent tone and wisecracks! Can't believe I never noticed that before. I love the light-hearted nature of these Superboy covers. It perfectly complements the tone of the series. And add me to the "that's not the creeper?" list. Another solid Grummett pick-up, Ruben! Congrats!

My first thought is there is a problem with the scale here. I know Superboy is supposed to be up in the sky, but the relative scale difference between him and the surfer is so huge - that cape has to be crazy long - for it to make sense. I presume Tom drew it this way to get nice silhouettes of the characters and not have the characters overlap and muddy that up. On the upsdie I love the inking and the poses are perfect! Congrats on another Grummet pick up!

So the only thing I left off - that was on my mind when I saw the art was that at first (before seeing the color cover) - was asking myself - is that the Creeper? seems a bit off but the face might be close. Then I answered my own question when I clicked on the published cover image. ha ha.

That is a super fun cover. Isn't it interesting how a cover can grow up on you? That has happened numerous times with me.
"Oh, I don't know if I like that one. Well, it's okay I guess. You know, that's a pretty cool image. Oh man, it's awesome, I gotta have it! This is the BEST COVER in my collection!! I'LL BE BURIED WITH THIS COVER!! Wait ... you'll give me HOW much for it? It's yours."
It's the circle of life.

Thought it was the Creeper at first glance, too! Even if not, this clearly has the same offbeat vibe :) Congrats!

Grummett was so solid and pleasing in an era over saturated with Image style.
