DescriptionI have enjoyed watching the highly entertaining Dueling Dealers of Comic Art broadcasts since the very first episode. Saw many items of interest but nothing ever caused me to pull the trigger. Then this came along.Still found it a bit cost restrictive for my current collecting budget. That's where Anthony Snyder came through once again! We worked out a very fair trade for both sides and I was able to add this gem. Unsure why this was not a published cover. Highly detailed and a striking design. "Wonder Woman with the Phoenix Force"? It's the best of both worlds. Have reached out to Don Kramer and hoping he might be able to share more details on the circumstances around this artwork's creation. A big thanks to Anthony for helping me acquire this. I am counting this as my first DDoCA "purchase" even though it technically occurred weeks after the show. *** UPDATE*** I was able to share this artwork with Don Kramer during HeroesCon 2024. He remembered the circumstances around why it was unpublished. The writer during his Wonder Woman run in 2010 was J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski had begun work on a movie script which forced a delay in his DC work. Dan DiDio, an editor in charge made the decision to produce a single fill-in story in an effort to provide a little deadline breathing room. The one issue story was titled "The Phoenix Egg". Don said that the interior pages (done by Drew Johnson) and this cover (done by him) were all complete before news reached Straczynski. Michael insisted that the issue not be used. DiDio then chose to shelve the story. The Drew Johnson interiors did eventually see publication in 2015 as part of the digital release Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #13. DC elected to use a different "cover" for the digital comic. Which left this artwork as unpublished...... Social/Sharing |

Great image, very powerful and masterfully inked! It's crazy that such a piece hasn't been published.

Gorgeous cover. The face and eyes provide such a strong background for the foreground figure. Congrats on this!

Thanks Eric. Have seen similar layouts to this before, but Kramer totally succeeded with her eyes in this one!

Unpublished? Well the good news is that may have made the art more available. But it certainly does not take away from the art itself. Congrats.

The editor who decided not to publish this must have been drunk on moonshine. The is sensational!

Stunning image! Love the combo of the WW close-up and the full body wide shot!

Lee, I've been staring at this for 5 minutes already, trying to figure out why, at the very least, DC wouldn't publish it as a variant cover. I mean, the image is generic enough that they wouldn't really have to worry that it looks like it belongs to a specific story. The only element that "might", is the phoenix, but even that could easily be passed off as a simple bit of symbolism and part of the graphic design of the piece. Either way, it's a wonderful illustration. Congrats on your first claim!

Thanks Ruben!
Maybe one day it gets pulled out of the DC archive?
I love it just as much either way (published or unpublished).

Stunning cover ! The ONLY reason I can think of why it wasn't published was if Kramer's run was cut short and was replaced with another creative team.

Gorgeous cover! And yeah, the idea of Wonder Woman weilding the Phoenix force? ... VERY intriguing. Congrats on making this one part of your collection, and hopefully it will be used some day as a published cover, cuz it NEEDS to be. :-)

Man, why wasn't it used as a cover?! Beats me! But doesn't take anything away from how awesome the image is. Dynamic stuff, an dlove the subtle grey tones. Congrats!
