Description

A Japanese friend of mine puts on art shows and invites artists who work in the Western comic book industry as well as artists and illustrators in the Japanese book, movie, anime and manga industries. Earlier this year, he called me up and asked me to come on down and help out Jim Cheung, who I'd met once before when he came over for the first Tokyo International Manga Festival (in fact, for helping him out, he drew a nice pencil sketch of Captain America for me which can be seen in another of my galleries). Of course I said yes, and took the bullet train out of the "Snow Country" through the long tunnel all the way to the Japan Art Expo in Kawasaki.

Jim was pretty busy over the two-day event and, when I wasn't too busy helping him, I had fun watching him draw for his Japanese "Ame komi (American comic book)fans. However, he is pretty meticulous, and he took on way more commissions than he could finish even over the span of the show. Fortunately, he was staying in town a few extra days and planned to work on the remaining drawings in his spare time. So, as I was getting ready to take the long trip back home, I asked him if he could do one more "take-home" commission and he said okay.

I often try and get American comic book artists to choose their favorite Japanese characters, but Jim said he'd prefer it if I made the choice for him. I came up with two ideas that I thought would work well with his style: Vampire Hunter D and San, otherwise known as Princess Mononoke.

He clearly seemed to prefer the "Wolf Girl" who, if you don't know, was the titular character of a Studio Ghibli film. My first thought was that it would be cool to incorporate her mask into the drawing, but he talked me out of that. Anyway, after leaving for home, I had but to wait patiently.

When the drawing arrived in the mail today, there was one little surprise. The drawing was done on a Japanese art board (shikishi) instead of the drawing paper he had been using at the expo. Cool!

My thanks go out to Jim and Yoshi. I enjoyed it, gentlemen. Let's do it again some time.

Love this character choice for Jim. I really dig her mask, but I think this was the way to go. Being able to see her hair in his style takes it up a notch IMO. Congrats.
