DescriptionVampire Hunter D started in 1983 as a series of novels written by Japanese author Hideyuki Kikuchi with illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano. The series has since spawned two really good anime movies, a manga series, an American comic adaptation, a video game, as well as an assortment of other media. The hero, D, who travels a post-nuclear war future Earth, is a dhampir, the half-breed child of a vampire father and human mother. Like Marvel's Blade, D doesn't have an aversion to sunlight nor an urge to drink blood, and is an ideal vampire hunter. D rides a cybernetic horse with mechanical legs, wields a crescent longsword, wears a mystical blue pendant, and has a good supply of wooden needles that he can fire off at high speeds. He also hosts a sentient symbiote named, simply enough, Left Hand, a wisecracking homunculus with a human face residing in his left palm who can suck in massive amounts of matter through a vacuum tunnel, and generally comes in very, um, handy when D gets into a jam. I first encountered the character in the, now cult classic, 1985 anime movie. It was grim and gritty with a blend of Michael Moorcock fantasy, post-apocalyptic science fiction, and Hammer gothic horror. I loved it, and it became one of my early favorite anime. (The 2000 anime movie was also awesome. Also worth a mention, I got to see a lot of really cool Amano Vampire Hunter D art at an art exhibition near my home here in Niigata Prefecture.) I've been waiting to find the right artist to do a commission of D, but the right artist/moment never really seemed to present itself... until recently. My friend Yoshi was able to hook me up with Saiko Takaki, a Japanese manga artist who drew "Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D" starting in 2007. The art is on a shikishi art board, and the picture doesn't quite do the art justice. Social/Sharing |

When it's on the board with the gold leaf borders, I'm seeing more use the gold markers for effects and outline in the art too. They look great in person, but don't scan as nice. This is a great get as this is far superior than most people can get.

Awesome! I'm not a big anime buff, but I love the 1985 movie. Great story, and so visually sublime...like this piece! Love the way the cape's kind of swirling, like D is an inhuman tornado, having just descended upon a cadre of vamps! And I gotta check that 2000 flick out. Congrats!

Killer commission! Love this drawing of Vampire Hunter D by Saiko Takaki. The spinning feeling created by the swirling cape and swinging sword really bring the animated film to life. Congrats on a fabulous pick-up!
