DescriptionWhat started as a goal to get 4 pin ups of the four replacement Supermen has expanded a bit to getting as many pin-ups of the major characters during that time as I possibly can. With that in mind, I didn’t have a Black Suit Superman pin up yet and with Butch Guice opening another commission opportunity late in 2022, I had to go for another one from him.One of the things that puzzled me as a kid was why during Superman’s debut, his longer hair was not there from the start. I later realized that it was just due to the lead time it takes to actually draw covers and pages and that the decision was made after some art had been completed to add his longer hair. It was also, I assume, to throw people off of the scent that the character being shown monitoring the activity of the replacement Supermen was the real Superman in the Fortress of Solitude and not Eradicator Superman who was operating out of the Fortress at that time. I always thought it would be cool to Superman, with his long hair, and in his black regenerator suit in the Fortress while monitoring the ”Supermen” who had arrived on the scene in his absence. Butch delivered what I was hoping for and then some. Love the “ready to jump back into the fray” determination on Superman’s face with some beautiful headshots on the monitors behind him. I absolutely love Butch’s evolved style, moving towards a more gritty realism approach to comic art. I’m absolutely over the moon thrilled to be able to add this to the collection! Social/Sharing |

Thanks so much for the kind words! I agree, Guice has been cranking out some absolutely stunning work recently (Matt's huge commission is another great example, that layout is perfection)! This was both exactly what I was hoping for and beyond what I was expecting! He nailed the serious/determined vibe I was going for!

Although Butch's style has changed, it's only gotten better with time. And he's taking these commissions seriously. Great commission idea, and I'm sure Butch surpassed your expectations - great detail and composition. Congrats!

Thanks! Agreed! I really dig his new stuff! My previous Eradicator piece leaned into that gritty nature with the rain setting, but even here, man it just looks great! The shadows/reflection technique applied to the floor is a treat to look at, anytime someone makes a floor visually appealing, well that's a win in my book!

The solid black suit works visually well sticking out front with the very detailed thin line backgrounds for those on the screen and for the fortress of solitude technology.

Agreed, that black suit just pops off. It's helped by the great reflective shadows to give it that extra bit of depth!

Unsurprisingly, Butch produced a stunner of a commission. The background monitor wall is exquisite, perfectly pushing forward the very regally standing Superman. The inking on the Eradicator, Superboy and Cyborg Superman figures in particular is exquisite, as is the inking on the floor. Congrats on a great commission experience, Carl!

A stunner indeed! I felt a bit like George Lucas on this one, with the need to decieve eliminated (The comic scenes left it open that this short haired Superman looking figure could potentially be the visored Kryptonian Superman), I really wanted to go back and do some "Special Edition" editing inserting the long hair and including Eradicator on the monitor! Butch delivered! I'm glad you mentioned the floor, its one of the things that jumped out at me almost immediately (ok, right after I took in Supes and the headshots). Even the walls of the fortress were given great care! Definitely a great experience all around!

I think you found a missing page from that story line!

Thank you for saying that! That was my goal all along! To find something fun that "fills in a gap" of the story I love so much! As I mentioned in my previous comment, definitely felt as if I was going back and adding a scene ala George Lucas! Unlike some of his Special Edition edits, this feels like a natural fit!

Wow, what an amazing cover-quality commission! I've never read much DC but back during the Death/Return of Superman, I couldn't get enough!

That era of DC was especially fun. Older readers at the time complained about all the changes to their favorite characters, but I loved it all and it turned me into a lifelong comic fan!

Another super Guice commission! I love his current style! Superman's face is mature, determined, and worthy of Mount Rushmore!

I'm a huge fan of Jackson's gritty, realistic art style. It's cool to see him apply that style to the 90's Superman. He is much missed. You have a piece of history!
