DescriptionWhen I was young and still had dreams, I was studying to be a comic book artist. Howard Chaykin in the 80's and early 90's was a big influence on me (and many others). I am not a big Wolverine fan but Jim Lee and Mark Silvestri on X-Men were also massive influences. Marvel re-used this image from Marvel Fanfare as a direct market poster. I absolutely loved the colors by Richard Ory on that image and I proudly placed that poster over my drafting table. There it hung, all through high school and into college. It made a couple of moves but I always placed it over my board, where I could draw inspiration from it.To be honest, I never considered owning this piece. It never entered my mind as an option so calling it a "grail" is not strictly accurate. I didn't set out in this hobby with the goal of someday owning this art. HOWEVER, when Chuck Arnold pointed this out to me; I had to own it. It was like a lightning bolt of nostalgia and I set about doing what needed to be done to procure it. I have to say thank you to Chuck, Jason D'Ambrosio, Lance Suarez, Patrick Rains, Bill Cox, Wolvie Fan Rob, James S and everyone else who either rooted me on or didn't bid on this so that I could bring it home. Absolutely amazing piece! Couldn’t be happier that you own it! Now hang it over your computer you pick Thursday art for to be inspired to pick X-men art!

Congratulations - this is a great piece! And although you never had this down as a grail, sometimes we obtain them before we even realise they were one! It's moments like this one that makes this hobby so great!

I was eye balling three things in this auction. I could have split my was chest three ways and put up softball bids on all three. Or I could go big and put all my eggs in one basket. The question was, which one? Unfortunately, I picked the wrong one. And ended up losing all three. I'm so glad fate made my choice for me and that I didn't get in your way for this one. It seems to have ended up where it was meant to be. Congratulations sir!

You get up for some bidding and your alarm’s fair warning
Chaykin’s Wolverine into the 80’s
There's an auction up from Chuck and people pushin', lots are closin'
Of artwork who try to look Jim Lee
And if your bid's on time, you can get artwork ink line
And start your slaving job so you can pay
If you ever get annoyed, look at me my bid’s destroyed
I love to look at artwork all day
And I'll be Chaykin care of business (every day)
Chaykin care of business (every way)
I've been Chaykin care of business (it's all mine)
Chaykin care of business and Howard everytime, claws out

Whether it's targeted or something you just stumble across, it's really cool when it takes you back to "that time" in your head. Congrats on being able to catch & ride that nostalgia wave with such a cool piece.

When I see this poster, I picture a young Snorek proudly showing his art to Wolverine. Logan looks at it, SNIKT, "DO IT AGAIN!!!"

1) Wolverine isn't real, Johnny. 2) Snorek doesn't cry.

You can't, as an ambassador of CAF, go on telling people that Wolverine isn't real. Some of us still believe. You've ruined Christmas.
Also, in regards to Snorek crying...I've heard that Chuck Norris' name used to be Chuck Snorek, but you made him change it. So yes, we all can agree that Snorek does not cry.

Wolverine is real Johnny. I seen his tracks deep in the woods.

An intense Chaykin (with a great cut camera angle) piece and a nasty Wolvie

Wonderful piece of art! Love the ferocity in Wolvie's face and that background is great! And seeing a fellow collector and friend bring home a piece so meaningful is always wonderful to see. Major congrats!
IT'S SNIKTING TIME!

I LOVED that all- pin-up issue of Marvel Fanfare; so many incredible pieces by iconic artists--but even among them, this one stood out. I was excited to see this come up for auction and am happy to hear it ended up in the perfect home. Congrats!

I believe the sentence in your description summarises the nature of the beast we call collecting. " I set about doing what needed to be done to procure it. " Nice artwork by the way.

Your description is so good on this powerful dynamic piece. It is simple yet conveys a great sense of movement and captures Wolverine very well. The background colors really give it that blood spatter look that enhances the sense of dynamic movement and deadliness of the claws. Special piece!

Despite the fact that an angry Wolverine has been drawn countless times, somehow Howard found a way to make this unique and uniquely Howard.
Brilliant pick up.

Fantastic collector's story, Chris, and I'm delighted this one is now home - sincere congrats! Even back then, you could really pick 'em! Chaykin brings all his skills to bear on this one to capture the savagery of Logan. The gradient splatter and sweet, simple composition / camera zoom are dialed in perfectly to showcase a killing machine of terrifying, remorseless efficiency. It has the feeling of a Byrne to me, with the raw power and fantastic presentation. Superb pick up, Chris! Congrats again on this artistic and auction triumph! :)
