DescriptionI was delighted to get this page from an early comic that my brother had purchased while we were on a childhood family holiday. In the UK in the mid ‘70s, remaindered Marvel and DC comics made their way in the summer holidays to newsagents in seaside towns to be picked up by children, whose parents were only too happy to buy something to keep them entertained. My brother got a run of Kamandi, including #25, and I got runs of Defenders and Plop.In this issue, which had an exciting cover of flying sharks attacking Kamandi and Flim Flam on the precarious remnants of a hovercraft, the mutant Ben Boxer returns and mutated sea life abounds. And on this page, Ben is attempting to restart the said hovercraft, with some great water effects from Kirby and some angles that emphasise the group’s watery predicament – especially the isolation in the final panel. Lots of classic Kirby elements on this Kamandi page, love it! I'm sure those runs you and your brother were given at that age were extremely well read and well loved. Getting art from those issues must be the ultimate nostalgia. congrats!

That's such a good point, Kavi. As children, we basically shared a collection, and the thrill of getting a page from one of our earliest comics does tend to be a step above a normal purchase. Somehow the images are burnt into our minds, and memories come flooding back.

This page reminds me I need my yearly checkup.Hopefully it won't lead to you needing a fuel injection like the hovercraft, John.

Great water effects that are just as impactful as some of Kirby's cosmic environments through the years. Ben Boxer's close up is so weird and yet is Kirby handsome at the same time. D Bruce Berry complimented the Kirby creativity with some of his best inking!

That's an interesting point about the impact of the backgrounds. Perhaps Kirby really did see it that way, that creating a sense of movement and danger meant making water as impactful as something like the Negative Zone.

It is an extra thrill, isn't it? I think it can affect my price ceiling calculations though...

Pure Kirby goodness with Thor Jr.! Also with nice, accurate 1:1 inks by Berry as usual but: Beware the crackling water !!!

Despite the sombre subject, Kamandi always struck me as a light entertainment series where Kirby's knack for fantasy was in full speed! Graphically, he is in top form, as is amply demonstrated here, a page full of wonders with action racing through at break-neck speed... And, yes, in the last panel, it does seem that the boat dives into Kirby's Kosmic Krakle, ready to join another dimension... What a treat!
