DescriptionDuring his search to find the last Frankenstein, the Frankenstein Monster stumbles across Drako the hunchback attacking a gypsy girl called Carmen. Dispensing with Drako, he follows the girl to a gypsy camp and meets Madame Marguerita. On this page, the Monster asks her for help in finding the last in the Frankenstein line, and there’s a suggestion that his question will be answered. Given the demeanour granted to Madame Marguerita by John Buscema, only the completely naive could possibly trust her, and she has another purpose altogether in mind. This is a page I bought back in the late 1980s, pulled out of a cardboard box of assorted pages in Comic Showcase in London. Verpoorten’s bold inks are great on this horror title, adding a bleak mood to Buscema’s glorious lines. There is much redrawing of the Frankenstein Monster’s face, reported as being done by Romita Sr to make the creature look less like Boris Karloff’s version. Buscema’s style is very evident in the drawing of the gypsies, with the fifth panel being pure JB at his very best. Social/Sharing |

Gypsies, tramps, and thieves
We'd hear it from the people of the town
They'd call us gypsies, tramps, and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down
But I've got you babe, we're not so different as you or I.

It's a song genre mashup - thanks for Cher-ing.

Great run by JB on Frankie, Verpoorten inks are perfect for him and the character. I loved these issues. Congratulations for this page and great memories of Comic Showcase back in the early 80's too !

Love Marvels 1970s Frank series, love all of Big John's work but his hastly and mostly undetailed work as a fast fill-in-artist art on these 4 issues after Ploog with Verpoorten's less than mediocre inks were sure no highlight in the short run and Buscemas superb career. But this page is moody and has great content, surely one of the best pages in the JB mini-run !
