DescriptionAbout 10 years after the new X-Men started, Marvel began reprinting the stories in Classic X-Men. In addition to amazing covers by Art Adams (and later Steve Lightle), the first few issues also featured new story pages written by Chris Claremont, with earlier pages drawn by original artist Dave Cockrum. This page ties in with the X-Men #103 story and features Storm vs. Juggernaut and Black Tom. I believe Dave both penciled and inked this, although it's not specifically credited. I've owned this page since 1999 and was able to purchase the color guide by Evelyn Stein in 2022. I actually paid more for the color guide than the original pen and ink art, which is a good indication of how much prices have risen in the past 25 years! Social/Sharing |

Crazy to hear that costs have risen that much and the color guide now costs more than when purchasing original Cockrum ink art. Great set of pages. I also enjoyed the extra additional story pages to original reprinted stories.

Ha yeah -- in this case the original was inexpensive (< $100) in 1999 and for some reason the CG went for a lot on Heritage (> $100).

That is impressive. And to get OA Cockrum art (X-Men nonetheless) for under $100. I am years late to this hobby but glad to have atleast jumped in. Huge congrats!

Sweet page - and always great to match up a pair of the comic art process!

Really cool how this new art fit in with the story being reprinted in the issue and Cockrum rocked it. Definitely not the moody artwork of Bolton. The whole Cassidy Keep storyline has been immortalized in animation and part of plenty of fans memories.

I loved the idea of adding extra pages, as long as they worked well. In this case, it did, making the transition between the previous and next pages less abrupt. By the way, Sam Grainger, the inker of the original story, is also credited with having inked this new page. Nice add,Ted, thanks for sharing it over a quarter of a century later!

Thanks Ruben. I'm pretty sure Dave mentioned to me years ago that he inked these extra pages himself and this doesn't look like Sam Grainger's work to me. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Marvel was just lazy with the credits and didn't both mentioning the inking for the new pages.

It feels that way to me too, Ted. But figured I'd let you know anyway. I agree, the person responsible for the credits was simply grabbing them from the original comic without taking the new page into account.

More for the color guide?! Yikes! Well, being 1999, guess I'm not surprised :) Love me some Ororo and you got a few great panels here. Sweet you were able to pair up the OA with the CG! I've got one piece like that and am stoked to have 'em in the portfolio side by side. Congrats, Ted!
