DescriptionContinuing my string of Black Panther (BP) posts to start 2020 and this one’s a BIGGIE – the last page to Hudlin/JRJR/Janson’s 6 issue arc “Who is the Black Panther?”! This run kicked off the 2005 relaunched BP series with a bang and was many readers’ intro to T’Challa and the world of Wakanda. I’ve got the cover to issue 5 by Terry & Rachel Dodson (check it out in my gallery) and the title page to this climactic 6th issue (also see in my gallery!) but am happy to now own what’s probably the premier interior page from the arc!The featured image here is clearly the big full shot on the right. Just an awesome image of BP in the classic Kirby costume, wounded and weary, but standing tall nonetheless. I’m clearly not the only one who thought so as this shot was used for the cover of the 2nd printing of the trade (see in additional images) – a nice little bonus for moi :) I’ve said this before but some of my favorite pieces are those that include a nice splashy shot AND some panel storytelling. Here on the left BP’s just let these United States zombie Deathlok soldiers (yep, you read that right) know what’s up. Let me elaborate just a little as the capper for me in buying this page was this moment, which might be my favorite from book. BP and his fellow Wakandans have just defeated Klaw and a group of assembled foes and the soldiers have conveniently just arrived to “assist”. Check out the published page below, and the one prior, to see some great dialogue. BP lets them know the threat’s been neutralized, so thank you, but no thanks. And, oh yeah, you better head out quick style or else. I love how BP’s actual words are polite but the threatening tone is clear. And on my page here you got that intimidating stare in the middle left panel to drive the point home. What else can the soldiers do but roll out and say “have a nice day” :) Marvel Animation actually used this arc and its art for an animated series aired on BET back in 2011. The series’ 6 episodes were basically made up of the arc’s 6 issues. They’re all online now, but to see this particular moment animated, go to this link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBm2-TPxIuY&list=PLJHDZGUl8IlraSLwfPFAt20sOIMoEE_P6&index=6 – and start 15:50 in. It's less than a minute to watch. There's something cool about seeing the art used this way (the headshot on this page is used as the image of BP delivering the main lines), and it’s equally cool to hear Djimon Hounsou voicing BP in this moment! Thanks, fellow CAFer George 1 for selling, and thanks all for looking – really do hope you like! Social/Sharing |

Not big on that first arc (I find that Hudlin got better and better till the very end after a so-so start) and I prefer my BP without the cape and YET this is obviousy an expcetional splashy piece of art.
And that close up on his face is not too bad either.
What Deathlocks? ;)

Thanks, Fred - always appreciated from a fellow BP fan! I prefer BP sans cape too but it is cool seeing it here as a splashy throwback to the original. The headshot is indeed cool. And those Deathloks ARE there :)

Appreciate that, T! Definitely happy with where the BP collection has gone...and is going! As I started collecting art I hadn't necessarily planned to have so much BP but that quickly changed, as evidenced! Thanks, all, for the comments!

The Romita Jr. & Klaus Janson combo is one of my absolute favourite artistic pairings of the modern era. Great page content too!

Such a great shot of BP it's easy to see why they used it for the 2nd print cover!

That's what I'm saying, George! A regal looking Panther, and as a fellow collector told me, accentuated by the nice lighting effect that JRJR started and Janson finished. Thanks for the comment, man - always appreciated!

Very nice BP page by JrJr! That splashy panther is amazing. And zombie deathloks? So cool.

I hear you, N M. It is pretty interesting how polarizing JRJR can be to art fans, and I myself go back and forth based on different pieces and runs he's done but there definitely are times when I'm like, "yep...brilliant." Thanks for the add!

JRJR and Klaus...It's hard to get more iconic a pencil/ink team together. And they ROCKED Black Panther here...is it observation or judgement in his stare? Doesn't matter, because he's about to rock someone's world. Your BP collection is just...stellar!!!

Observation, judgement, both? Agree - it doesn't matter which is it is! Say that last line like the Rock :) In any case these zombies best get to steppin' if they know what's best for 'em. Thanks for the great comments today, Ellis!
