DescriptionBeen off CAF a bit just due to busyness; graduations, travel, birthdays, work, etc – definitely got some CAF perusing to catch up on! But did want to post this recent get as it’s a biggie for me. A page from the Whedon/Cassaday Astonishing X-Men run has been on my list for a while…but it had to be the right page. And here we are. Not just “right” but a top 3 page for me from the whole run, and one of those moments that stuck in my head ever since the first reading. Wolverine doing what he does, then those last 2 lines:“Two words.” “Left ear.” :) Seared into my brain! Just love that transition from panel 4 to 5. And overall, as you move down the page, a real cinematic feel. Really dug Cassaday’s Wolvie costume in this book, too – throwback look but with a modern, fresh twist. When I saw Hugh Jackman suited up in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie THIS was the look I thought of. Thanks, fellow CAFer Peter, for allowing me to nab this one! It’s in a good home. And hope to see whoever’s making it to Heroes Con this coming weekend! Social/Sharing |

Spring is a killer busy season for parents with young kids!
You seem to find the best pages! Glad you got the one "seared" in your brain. Those are always worth more than what you paid for!

True! I have moved more towards, by and large, waiting for that perfect, or close-to-perfect example (at least for me) these days, vs going for the OK-to-good more immediate get. Easier said than done (patience!), and can be a little pricier, but VERY satisfying once in hand. Witness exhibit A :) Thanks, John, and all, for the comments!

Cassaday's run in the late '90s and early 2000s was so good. I had dropped off the X-titles long before but couldn't resist getting back into Astonishing after reading Planetary. This has all you could want in a Cassaday X-page.

I have all 4 trades on my bookshelf here, collecting the whole run, and I flip through them often. Modern classic, NO doubt! Top 5 X run for me. Thanks, brother. Hope to catch up in person soon, brother!

Cassaday and Wolverine are a match made in heaven. I am happy that you are doing well and that it was just good busyness. Glad to have you back.

A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your Wolvie rage
Astonish lines have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at Joss the same
But artwork style of Cassaday
Disappear now when I dream to graduate
Left ear without you, KG
But you're seared on my busy mind
The ink around you, KG
And the Beast’s about you all the time
Left ear without you, KG
But you're still with me in my team
And two words for only you and me, yeah

"Left ear without you, KG" LOL!
The Wai's just keep rolling
As the people leave their CAF way to say hello
I've heard these lines they keep me sated
But I know that it gets better as Wai goes, oh yeay, yeah
You da man!

Fantastic piece and early in their iconic run, congrats on this great page. This was another great era for X-Men, amzing stories being told, well written and really well X-cuted action art to go along with it. Cheers!

Great up close and detailed panel to panel action! Cassaday's style is gorgeous throughout and that last panel helps make for an interior that any OA collector would be proud to own.

Grabbing one of your top three pages from an entire run is quite the joyful accomplishment! And this sequence of action panels is definitely top tier. Wolverine looks amazing, but as a fan of how Cassady drew the Beast, that top panel really grabs my attention. Congrats!

Just grab a clean gym sock and cover it up. Good to go. Losing one little ear is not an excuse to let them escape

Amazing action page of that fierce guy!!! Not sure if the last panel would be authorized by Comics Code Authority in 60' or 70's ... ;)!!! What a last panel man!!!!

A fantastic, widescreen piece featuring Wolverine in action? Now there's some gorgeous storytelling! Naturally you're very proud of this one. How CAN'T you be?! Kick ass, man, congrats!

The power conveyed in every panel is astounding, but it's that last panel that kills me (pun not intended). Big congrats and welcome back!

Congrats on getting one of your top pages from the Whedon/Cassaday run! It doesn't always happen, but it is nice when the stars align just right for that. This run was a classic (really need to give it a re-read), and this is a great Wolverine sequence.

Thanks, man, and I agree - one of the top pages from the run, no doubt. And no bias ;) Happy to have it. Maybe the fact that the stars align less often than not makes those instances that much more gratifying. Maybe, lol. Well I feel it here, anyway! Yes, re-read the series - holds up OH so well. I got the trades on my bookshelf here and flip through 'em often, just to look at that art and take in some of those moments. Thanks, again, Kin!

YES!! "Left ear"!! Indelible -and- astonishing, indeed - such were the moments in this run, and you nabbed a killer piece. Love the action choreography here, especially in panel 3, with Logan's kick and downward slash feeling like complimentary actions for economical, lightning-fast storytelling (love the vivisection of the gatling's barrels, too. GREAT composition.). Add me to the Cassaday Beast camp (both in the terms of how John drew him, and how John -is- one :) )! Splendiferous grab, K! What a gem!

That's right, man, kick/slash at the same time...efficiency, baby. Logan's got some experience with this stuff :)
I know we're in the same camp as far as his work on this run...a BEAST. His best stuff. IMHO :) Thanks, J!

Agreed. Was surpised and saddened to hear the news yesterday. Makes me appreciate his contributions to our medium here that much more. Thanks for the add, Jared. RIP John Cassaday.
