Description

Berke Breathed's Bloom County was my favorite comic strip of the 1980s. Breathed used the strip's cast of characters (both people and anthropomorphic animals) to engage in political and social satire and commentary, ridiculing numerous American politicians, personalities, corporations, institutions and cultural fads/trends from the decade. Like Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury in the 1970s, Bloom County felt very much like the voice of the 1980s in comics and was much beloved among me and my circle of friends.

The strip originally ran from December 8, 1980 to August 6, 1989. Breathed's Sunday-only spin-off strip Outland, which would ultimately utilize many characters from Bloom County, ran between September 1989 and March 1995, while Opus (the Penguin) headlined his own Sunday-only strip between November 2003 and November 2008. Bloom County itself was formally revived in 2015 as a periodically published online-only strip.

This particular strip was published 35 years ago to the day and features the precocious Milo Bloom playing the "straight man"; the chain-smoking, frat boy attorney Steve Dallas; and the hilariously scraggly Bill the Cat!

Was my favorite strip of the '80s as well - Bill the Cat was a great part of it - sweet example!
