DescriptionOkay, so this one is quite the trip...I don't think I have to talk much about the art itself. Anyone who's a fan of Marvel's cosmic universe (or Space Marvel as my friend Jason calls it) recognizes this art and this issue. Silver Surfer 50 took place one month before the Infinity Gauntlet series started and this was a great issue. Surfer faces statue Thanos after thinking he was dead. Real Thanos controls this Thanos. When Thanos finally gets bored and the battle ends, surfer rushes to earth to tell the heroes Thanos is back and crashes through Dr. Strange's window and thus begins the infinity gauntlet storyline. This was also the final issue that Jim Starlin wrote the story for Surfer, and it shows. As good as Ron Marz was, there's a notable decline in storyline in the following issues (even if Lim's art stayed strong). Ron Lim took the Thanos art mantle from Jim Starlin and was amazing. I think the 3 best Thanos artists ever are Starlin, Perez and Lim. And I'm thrilled to have some of each in my collection. I saw this dps in a comment left in a Facebook post. I reached out to the commenter and asked if he'd sell it to me and he pretty much said "only if you blow me away with an offer." So I did. He bought this DPS in 1999 on eBay. He actually lost the auction (for 300 bucks!), but when the buyer didn't pay, he was offered a second chance buy and has had it ever since. Well now he has a huge chunk of cash for his kid's college funds. So it's a win-win. When we made the deal, it was on the condition I paid for it and picked it up in person. So I flew to Miramar Beach Florida, took an Uber straight to the bank to meet him, got 12 minutes of beautiful weather outside the bank waiting for my Uber back to the airport, and then took 2 more flights home. All in all 3 flights, 3 Ubers, 13 hours of travel and a lot of money. But so worth it! These pages will be on my wall for the next who-knows-how-many years. Thank you Terry! And thanks to my advisors (you know who you are) for helping enable me. (And thank you James for the scanning help.) Social/Sharing |

A great pick up by a guy that OBVIOUSLY hates Silver Surfer and Thanos. :p I love the dialogue and presence of the one who worships death

Top flight page X3! If you are looking for a Stalin/Lim Surfer and Thanos page(s), this is among the best. Congrats and thanks for sharing the art and story - great stuff!

Run and tell all of Space Marvels
This could take three flights
Think I need a Thanos to help me get things right
Hook me up a Uber solution
Cause this Fisch doesn't drive
We sat around Surfin' and watched the Facebook Live
Now, Lim lookin' to the thigh to save me
Starlin for a thigh of life
Starlin' for somethin' to help me board my flight
And I'm lookin' for a explaination
Lookin' cause art is double wide
Make my Wai gap home when I learn to thigh high

I can give you a list of maybe a dozen comic books that were so huge to me when they came out that I can remember every detail of the buying experience. Silver Surfer #50 was one of the last times that happened. I remember the time of day I bought it (around 1:00 - I was off from school that day), the weather (sunny but unseasonably cool), who I was with, flipping through it while on line to pay, the sign at the register saying it was limited one per customer (the store owners underestimated the demand), showing my family the silver cover thinking it would somehow impress them the way it impressed me, and so on. That's my long-winded way of saying congrats on getting such an amazing piece! It's a wondrous thing to see!

Statue Thanos is one scary dude.
He must double over in laughter when anyone complains about $50 for postage.

Great story of how you obtained the piece! Reminds me of mine when i got my OCA Holy Grail. Although in my case no planes just a long trip in my car.
Excellent 2xSplash. IMHO a significantly nicer presentation piece than the gimmicky foil cover :)

Dude ! A couple things... 1) so bleeping happy you got this the second I saw if I knew it belonged with you 2) holy hell what a trip and story to get it, I know all the gory details and you left out some of the other bumps and bruises 3) it is an absolutely amazing piece of art in its own right but this dps and issue really is the "birth" of the infinity gauntlet story line. 4) I LOVE ART THAT GETS FOUND anyone can mortgage the house at auction finding negotiating and securing art from none art collectors is the best!

I want it back! (joke). Glad it's found a new home and will be cherished by its new owner. You can't take it with you the say, but I've enjoyed it for the last 20+ years, and hope you get as much enjoyment from it as I have. Now, who wants to sell me some comic books? Oh wait, that money is for the kids. Lol.

Shut down the Lim Thanos quest because you couldn't possibly find one better than this DPS. The saga of the Florida pilgrimage was well worth it!
