DescriptionThis image is imprinted on my brain from the late 80s. One of the 4 covers to the Wolverine Saga, my favorite books as a kid. (To see more details about that, see my Wolverine Saga 1 listing where I went into it. I won't bore you by repeating everything here.)Needless to say, JR Jr killed it, and Austin's inks always make everything so much better. Social/Sharing |

Very memorable image. It's a stunning cover. Looking at it now I get slight Sam Keith vibes from late 80s JRJR.

Awesome image from JRJR and a nice pairing with your Liefeld issue 1 cover! That makes half of them in your possession! Wonder if the other 2 are out there?! Congrats, man, this is a biggie!

Awesome. I also loved this mini and reread the Saga multiple times..was like a great cliffnotes for Wolverines history. Loved the back story of Ogun with his bad@$$ red mask. He was the OG darthmaul. Great add Fisch

The Logan's upon us, it's that time of year
Wolvie and eggnog, there's Terry’s ink cheer
There's lines on the teeth and there's claws to Ogun
There's mischief to Dagan, no wrongs to this fun
Ink wells and there's 80’s, the kids love Marvel
True love finds a Fisch beneath fresh episode
Some families are messed up, Romitas are fine
If you think yours is crazy, well, you should see mine

Nooooo! Why would Wolvie want to do that to an Oni mask?! Makes for a great cover but ruins a perfectly evil mask!

These books were the best, I especially loved the thick card stock covers. There weren't a ton of those sort of premium format issues around before these, especailly by Marvel. Thanks so much for posting for our appreciation! Way cool.

Wow! Very striking cover to the Wolverine Saga by John Romita Jr. and Terry Austin. Here, Wolverine has skewered an oni mask. I'm not entirely sure what the cover means, but I suspect it reflects the fascination Logan has had for Japanese culture for many years and the pain that he has suffered as a result. He fell in love with a Japanese woman, Mariko Yashida, the daughter of Japanese crimelord Lord Shingen. They were almost married, but she called it off. Later on, he carried on a relationship with a Japanese assassin. And still later, he had to rescue Kitty Pryde when she was brainwashed by Ogun, Wolverine's old master. This cover undoubtably symbolizes his complicated feelings about all of that history. Fabulous pick-up, congrats.
