Description

As the fleet of the Ottoman Empire approaches Malta, The Phantom is imprisoned by the Doge of Venice. "Duel in Venice part 1" pg. 16 (1986). Lettered in Swedish for the original Scandinavian publication.

The Phantom has been published as a comic book in Scandinavia from the 1950s. Along with publishing stories from the original American newspaper strip, they've also produced their own stories since the 60s.
Kari T. Leppanen (b. 1945) has illustrated over a hundred Phantom stories since 1979. Outside Scandinavia, many of them have also been published in Australia by Frew.
Leppanen says his own favorite stories to illustrate are the Phantom's historical adventures. His favorite collaborator on these stories was the English writer Norman Worker (1927-2005).
Leppanen and Worker's most celebrated collaboration is a cycle of three of stories where the Phantom gets involved with the Knights of Malta. It consists of a story set during the Siege of Rhodes (1522) published in 1980, and two stories published in 1986 about the Siege of Malta (1565).
The latter two stories have been published in English by Frew as "Duel in Venice part 1" and "Duel in Venice part 2: The Battle on Malta".
