DescriptionHere's a great example from the James Bond comic strip's adaptation of Goldfinger, featuring James Bond, Auric Goldfinger and Oddjob! The James Bond comic strips were published in the U.K.'s Daily Express newspaper and ran from 1958-1983. 52 story arcs were published in total, with artist John McLusky drawing the first 13 between 1958 and 1966. Goldfinger was the seventh story arc, matching the chronology of Ian Fleming's Bond novels, and was published between October 3, 1960 and April 1, 1961, predating the 1964 film version by several years. In this strip, Goldfinger orders his factotum, Oddjob, to demonstrate his strength to Bond by destroying a sturdy wooden stair rail with a single blow - in the film, you will recall that Oddjob memorably crushes a golf ball in his hand to similar effect! The strip was adapted from Ian Fleming's 1959 novel by Henry Gammidge with McLusky providing the artwork. Social/Sharing |

Great work with the pen and brush. Even if this exact scene wasn't depicted in Goldfinger, I hope McLusky felt some pride in influencing the look of the movie.

Neat! I didn't realize that they adapted the stories in the strip.

Super duper and rare as sadly McLusky did not get to do many.

Pretty interesting that the real version in the novel is Korean as the film version is played Japanese. Dynamite comics of today uses a new character as Oddjob with Korean ancestry.

Oddjob is actually Korean in the film - Goldfinger quips to Bond that golf is not yet the national sport of Korea in reference to Oddjob's alleged lack of understanding of the game (as it turns out, he understands it very well and helps his boss cheat!) The actor who played him was of Japanese descent (by way of Hawaii), though.

I guess I'm too much of a wrestling fan to separate the guy with his wrestling gimmick.

Wow! Haven't seen a James Bond Daily in a long time. What a great example of John McLusky's work. This is a terrific daily with Bond meeting Goldfinger for the first time and being treated to a demonstration of Oddjob's deadly talent. McLusky was a very talented Scottish artist who drew James Bond for the Daily Express for many years, adapting 13 of Ian Fleming's novels to comic strip form. I admire his very direct style and his faithful adaptation of the novels. Fabulous pick-up, congrats!
