DescriptionDaniel Warren Johnson is one of the most exciting comic artists around. From “Space Mullet” to “Murder Falcon” to “Extremity” to “Wonder Woman: Dead Earth” to “Do A Power Bomb,” DWJ has created some of the most compelling comics to hit comic book shelves in years. So when I saw this variant cover he drew to “Batman and the Joker: The Deadly Duo #5,” I didn’t hesitate, I just went for it. What a frightening portrait of the Batman’s greatest enemy, and in this story, his partner in crime-busting. I love the Joker’s expression here, something between an sheepish grin and sheer madness. The crazed look in his eyes and the ghastly grin on his lips make you wonder how Batman could ever trust him enough to work with him. I love the POV Daniel used here, Looking up at the Joker looming above us with a bloody hammer in his hand, almost as if we are his victim. Blood splatters cover his clothes from the hammer in his gloved hand all the way up his black suit. Behind him, hideous laughter echoes endlessly down the length of the cover. Talk about a killer cover! Something tells me that this may be my first Daniel Warren Johnson cover, but it won’t be my last.Social/Sharing |

While I love this cover and DWJ's work, I'm just as impressed that you won the Felix race for that day!

I don't collect Joker art but have always appreciated all the different artists' takes on the insanity. That deranged look and blood splatter is executed to perfection by DWJ.

Batman and Joker working together?? I immediately thought of Bill Murray's quote from Ghostbusters: "Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together ... mass hysteria!" What an awesome cover! Somehow the Joker with a hammer is more scary than the Joker with any other weapon. It just evokes such 'up close and personal' potential savagery. And that expression on his face ... gruesome and bone chilling in the best possible way. Major congrats, Bill, another winner for your amazing collection!

Congrats on securing this one. The first thing that popped into my head when I saw it was Gallagher's old watermelon bit. Hahahahahaha!

My favourite part is how Johnson drew him hunched over to make it look as if Joker is aware that he's taller than the comic book cover and has to do whatever necessary to fit into it. He did an exquisite job on the Joker's face and the sheer violence the he has just perpetrated as indicated by all the white paint splatter is also beautifully done. Big kudos, Bill!

I don't take you as a modern art collector, Bill, but I think we can make an exception here. Instant classic!

It's a great cover design in how it's just the face and the outline of the Joker with the rest filled up the beauty of wild spontaneous entropy. It is what the Joker represents.

Didn't realize what a big deal this cover was until Heroes two weeks ago, when so many collectors brought theirs to get signed and graded. Apparently fetching a pretty penny on eBay. But nothing like owning the original cover;) Congrats, Bill!

DWJ is so chaotic, complicated, and beautiful...2 of those 3 descriptors can also be said of the Joker.

That's not terrifying at all.... Creepy Joker face aside, the large amount of white splatter against the black suit really gives the sense that something messy just happened. Still, congrats on landing a DWJ cover!

Whew, impressive stuff. First, the layout and design element, in terms of Mr J crouching over to SMILE for that shot after having just...doing what he does. Second, the pure illustration. Definitely visceral with the "HA" background, and that spatter is super effective. Big congrats, Bill!
