DescriptionI've provided some background information on Mort Cinder, Alberto Breccia & Hector German Oesterheld's graphic storytelling triumph, in the 'Charlie's Mother' description in this same gallery. This page is from the 'Lead Eyes' story that ran from July 20 - December 14, 1962. It's the first story that follows the prologue introducing us to Ezra the Antiquarian and finishing with the line "Is the past as dead as we believe?" The only time we hear (or see) the Mort Cinder name in that story is in the title page - it's an otherwise Ezra-only story. It's in 'Lead Eyes' that we finally meet Mort. Ezra is given an amulet by another antiquarian - and it's wrapped in a newspaper with an article about a murderer having been hung that morning...and his name is Mort Cinder. From there, we meet the three leaden-eyed men who want the amulet and become the driver of the action as they chase Ezra to the grave of Mort Cinder to find it. It's where Ezra meets Mort for the first time and begins the journey, through this story and future ones, of who Mort is. As Ezra puts it, 'The more I know, the deeper the chasm. Mort Cinder, chasm of time, chasm of incredible human experiences. Chasm of unexpected death, a bottomless chasm that pulls with an irresistible force.' This page features Mort & Ezra approaching the home of Professor Angus, the creator of leaden-eyed men. It's simultaneously beautiful and haunting - kind of like the story. It's long, lays the foundation for what is to come and contains stunning sequences artistically. Hope you enjoy! Social/Sharing |

Nice architectural details in panel four, and spooky uplighting.

I don't know the first thing about this artist, this series, these characters, or this story. But there is so much to appreciate in the artwork that I don't even know where to start. Love the chalky texture of the sky in the first two panels. That uplighting in the third panel is just brilliant. And the light and shadow of the structural facade (and the two figures) in the fourth panel is so well executed. You could teach a class on this piece.

I think you might do a better job of teaching that class than me, Eric!

Wow, terrific and haunting. At the rate you're going, I hope there's a Slingsby Bros edition in the planning stages :)

A very memorable page artistically from a book of memorable pages and scenes. This was Breccia's breakthrough work in my opinion although hints of genius can be seen earlier works. Great page.

The heavy shadows does give you lead eyes as the atmosphere gives everything a sense of weight.

Wooooooooow! This is just brilliant draftsmanship. 1962... imagine if someone like Breccia had been tapped to lead the launch of the Marvel universe. My mind boggles at the idea of how incredibly different the universe, and superhero comics as a whole, might have looked had the titles all been drawn by realistic illustrators such as this.....

Really beautiful! Love the lighting and the brushwork. Do you think he used a crayon or wax pencil rubbed over texture on the back of the board? Very cool technique if so! Congratulations on another fantastic addition to your collection. :-)

That is a great question...but I'm going to need you to see the piece in person to answer it for me!
