Description11x17.5 bristol board, inks over pencils.I recently mused that an X-Men gallery about sandwiches would be awesome but short on pages and then I legit found this like an hour later and went "well, okay then". Please enjoy this overly specific and dumb idea that I'm calling The X-Men Try to Enjoy a Sandwich Without Dying. The time-displaced O5 are glad to be back on Earth after the Black Vortex crossover, particularly Cyclops: Baby Edition who's been offworld much longer in his own series with his dad Corsair. He's been stuck eating a lot of murdery flying lizards and unidentifiable space goop for 12 issues of space pirate adventures so that burger is probably the best meal he's had in a loooooong time. I'm very inclined to believe Magik when she says to never doubt her food decisions. Over in Brian Michael Bendis' concurrent Uncanny run, Illyana and Cyclops: Old Depressed Edition end up getting hooked on a $30 pancake place in New Orleans which must have been amazing because the eyebrow-raising price doesn't stop the two from repeat visits. If I could instantly teleport to any restaurant in the world, I would absolutely use that power to build out the best takeout repertoire on the planet. and uhhhhhh responsibly use my powers for good and help people with them or something, yeah Also, the Shi'ar or the Kree or whoever can badmouth Earth as much as they want but I don't believe for a second that our food game doesn't rock the shit out of theirs. Which planet has all the sandwiches?? That's right. Don't you forget it. Mahmud Asrar does a great job at fitting the whole gang and their chow into limited page space while also evoking the run's familiar setting of an abandoned Weapon X base nestled in the Albertan Rockies. He also nails the comedic delivery on this page because these were fairly memeable panels for a time--though, sandwich-wise, they've since been supplanted by Phil Noto's Philly cheesesteak moment from 2020's Cable #2. Asrar is great with facial expressions, particularly awkward and panicked ones, and while that skill comes into play on this page it will absolutely hit in a huge way for Jean and Bobby in the following pages of this issue. Bendis put his cast through constant shenanigans in this run and Asrar was certainly game to bring said shenanigans to life. Social/Sharing |

The best line is "TykeLops" from Magik! Look at him chow down like a guy on the jumbotron at the Knicks game! I think Asrar adopted a little bit of Bachalo's Generation X style here to show these X-Men as just kids.

Are you ruling out the possibility that aliens on another planet may have invented a food item that is even superior to our sandwich???
In any case, kudos for actually creating a gallery about X-Men eating sandwiches. That's a truly hilarious idea, and I'm curious to see what else makes the (cold) cut.

Okay, so, I am not rulling out the possibility, but I will say the sandwich is an incredible merging of form, function, and delightfulness and is a feat of Earth-based engineering.
Also, consider this: when the Federation opened up Deep Space Nine, the Klingons set up a restaurant there like, immediately, and hooked Starfleet officers on a dish of live, blood-eating worms when they had the ability to replicate almost anything they wanted. That's confidence. Qo'noS knew what they had and they were going to let everybody know. I don't see that kind of swagger on Knowhere or Arakko!
It wouldn't surprise me that, on a cultural reconnaissance mission, Skrull agents ended up at a Costco, picked up a $1.50 hotdog and realized with horror that "by Veranke, people would defect for an all-beef. We need to Secret Invade these primitive barbarians right now before anyone can find out."

Great page featuring the full original 5 team and some additional, great panels and especially love how Magik's pose works so well for multiple panels. Congrats!
