DescriptionThis piece was done by the great Alex Varenne, a master of French erotic comics, as part of the Erma Jaguar series (roughly from 1986-1988, and published in English by Catalan Communications in 1991. The title translates to "Erma Jaguar, the Tears of Sex - the Promise of Travel".This piece was created as an illustration for a silkscreen - Ink and screen on film - 67x52 cm which was first released in 1987, and was later published in a book in 1992, Varenne, Zones Erogenous, page 44. In his works, Varenne depicted a post-apocalyptic view of society, but built his stories around historical fact. In this way, he criticized totalitarian rule and nuclear armament. His work is of a moment in the 1980s, registering the fear and instability of global conflict and nuclear war. Varenne's fame came from his erotic work published in Libération, where he created the female character 'Erma Jaguar'. Erma Jaguar is an exploration of dangerous sex, the allure of it and the possible repercussions. Erma is named in the title after the 1980s edition Jaguar XJ6 in which she prowls the streets, alluringly dressed and responding to whatever she might find. An early indication of her lack of sexual boundaries is that she’s able to shock even a seasoned prostitute with a whispered suggestion of possible activity. The sexual content of Erma is very interesting, with Varenne years ahead of his time with regard to some attitudes, including discussions of consent and how it is depicted. Social/Sharing |
