DescriptionExcited to be posting this piece of vintage bronze goodness! I focus more on ‘80s art and up as stuff prior was before my time but there are definitely exceptions to be made…like Sal B. on my favorite hero characters, Spidey and Black Panther (BP), in action, way back in MTU #20?! Yessir! Another BIG check off the BP artist list – I got big bro John on an Avengers page (check it out here: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1522286) so had to get lil’ bro if at all possible :) And you don’t see BP and Spidey paired up very often. I got this page and a Bianchi cover featuring the 2 – if any of you out there see other pieces for sale, holla atcha boy!Great page here released around the time of BP’s first solo book in Jungle Action, and it’s cool that that’s referenced in panel 1. Love the classic dialogue, where you’ve got the hero talking to himself out loud a bit more than you see these days :) Some high stakes action here – Spidey’s in deep you-know-what and BP’s timing’s gotta be perfect lest he snap Spidey’s neck…and his own! Great BP head shot in panel 1, and I love the storytelling flow through the page, capped off by those great images in panels 6 and 7. Also, I like how both character’s names are noted prominently, bid and bold, on the page – BP in panel 1 and Spidey in panel 6. And why’s Spidey falling? He just got tail whipped by Stegron the Dinosaur Man, who made his first appearance in this 2 issue arc! This scene is also used for the cover – see in additional images above. Thanks, fellow CAFer Dan Goodsell, for parting with it – it’s got a good home :) And it looks like the book credits both Frank Giacoia and Mike Esposito as inkers – if anyone knows who did this particular page, let me know! Thanks, all, for looking and stay well and safe out there during these crazy times! Social/Sharing |

Oh my gosh, what an exciting page!! Every panel is beautifully drawn, and I love seeing an adventure featuring Black Panther & Spider-Man together! This page has definitely found the perfect home. :)

Having grown up a Hulk fan, Sal Buscema was always one of my favourite artists. While it's true that he has never been the draftsman that his big brother was, Sal has always been a solid storyteller with an immediately recognizable style. This page featuring T'Challa using his acrobatic skills to save Spidey in mid air thousands of feet in the air serves as a great example of that!

It's funny when I read your comment the second sentence made me think JRJR, just substitute "father" where you have " big brother" :) And I totally agree with regards to Sal B. - a master storyteller for many years, particularly on the action sequences in the many books he's worked on. Thanks Ruben, and all, for the comments!

While I prefer modern Sal on Spidey, this is a great great page more focused on BP anyway. Congrats!

I'd tend to agree as I know Sal's work most from growing up on his Spectacular Spidey work of the late '80s/'90s - definitely got a few pages from that run in my gallery :) And you're right, I got this page in part because it has both BP and Spidey, but BP is definitely the featured character and I count it as crossing Sal B. off the BP art list!

What a catch. Was the BP or Willy Mays? Wonderful page.

Somewhere Gwen is thinking "where was the Panther when I needed him?"

Ha, I'd be lying if that moment didn't cross my mind when seeing this! ASM 121 was released less than a year prior to MTU 20 - perhaps Spidey picked up some pointers as I think he's probably had his own similar saves since :)

Well, I'm glad I'm here for ya, P ;) It's funny, for me it's not so much "missing" as these books and the subsequent OA are from before I was born, but I've definitely come to appreciate the "classic" nature over my comic and OA collecting years! Thanks for the comment, man!

Sal Buscema and Frank Giacoia already delivered some good goodness on the Black Panther, way back in the Avengers days... Great to have them at their peak again, teaming up and add Spider-Man to the fold!

Great point, Al! And now that I think of it, kind of a cool, connecting "in between" type of page - Sal B. on Black Panther and as part of the Avengers before this, and we know after this Spectacular Sal enjoyed (well I hope he enjoyed it cuz I know I did) a spectacular run on Spectacular Spider-Man! Thanks for the comment, man!

I can only agree that Sal's run on Spider-Man was really spectacular (pun intended)! I don't know if this MTU story was just a job-as-usual for him, but linking these artistic bits and pieces sure makes for an interesting path...
