Another amazing glimpse into Don Newton’s early work! You can really see him channeling the spirit of Frazetta’s EC Comics science fiction work here. There’s that same sense of dramatic movement, bold composition, and atmospheric depth. Even before turning pro, Newton was showcasing a mastery of storytelling and illustration that would define his later career. A fantastic piece of The Savage Earth history!

I should've mentioned that I particularly like the Eisner-esque use of type in the first panel on this example. In a way, as nice as Don's DC work was, I can't help but feel that some of his real potential was actually a little constrained by the demands of producing entire comic book stories with tight deadlines, combined with the crummy plastic plate printing that companies began to use in the '70s. Artists began to not bother with expressively fine lines at this time, and it seems that brush work got less subtle and refined. Are any of these for sale?
