Description

This is the cover art to the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Hardcover of We3 released under D.C. Comic’s Black Label in September 2024.

We3 is writer Grant Morrison & artist Frank Quitely’s three-issue mini-series published in 2004 under D.C. Comic’s Vertigo imprint.

We3 describes the three prototype "animal weapons" – a dog (‘Bandit”, a.k.a., “1”), a cat (“Tinker, a.k.a., “2”) and a rabbit (“Pirate”, a.k.a., “3”) – that are part of a government weapons system project. The animals are all encased in weaponized robotic armor that affords them deadly physical capabilities and a limited ability to speak via skull implants.

The group is effectively a government assassination team. After a successful test assignment, the General in charge of the program decides they are to be killed so the development team can focus on the next generation of animal weapons. The doctor in charge of the program balks at killing the animals and releases them into the wild. As you might guess, all hell breaks loose as the animals seek to get back ‘home’.

The story’s power lies in the stark contrast of Bandit, Tinker & Pirate – normally household pets whose mission in life is to connect to their human owners and enhance their lives - made to be military weapons. Technology warps their nature and makes them killers of human beings. Not all the animals survive the tale.

Anyway, if you have not read We3, I’d highly recommend it. And I hope you enjoy this highly detailed piece by Mr. Quitely.

Lastly, huge thanks to Joseph Melchior of BritComicsArt.com (www.BritComicsArt.com) for making this happen!

Whoa. This is the first published piece from this series that I've seen out in the wild, and what a piece it is. Beautiful. Congrats on prying this from Frank's fingers!

What a stunner - Vin really poured his heart and soul into this series and 20 years later the love is still there. A beautiful Quitely example - congrats!

Never thought I'd see a We3 page, much less a cover, out in the wild! An absolute stunner from, in my opinion, Quitely's seminal work. Congratulations!

When you think about human beings, there's a long list of celebrated achievements that define us as a race.  While this drawing may not even register as a blip on that list, in looking at it, you still can't help but be in awe of what a human being can do with just pencil and paper.

Well, said! One of these days I'm going to have to make sure you see this in person - he put his heart & soul into it!

Magnificent Quitely example, and one of the rare We3 pieces Ive seen. Beautiful contrast between the natural world and the grotesque ways in which humanity seeks dominion and control over animals and nature.

I thought he never sold any of his art from this? Loved the series. Love this, needless to say.

Beloved series and Quitely's art shows he still has quite an affinity for that the series done when he was just at the cusp of stardom.

I still find that We3 is one of the top (Morrison and) Quitely projects in (their/) his career.

Oh, ok, yeah. A We3 cover. That's fine, that's totally normal. I'm surprised that I'm even commenting on this.
