Description

It is amazing to me that I have a page from the Eisner award winning graphic novel Fun Home. Fun Home is a landmark work, both in terms of queer art and narrative autobiography in general. It is one the rare comics to have made the New York Times Best Sellers list (not the graphic novel list that used to be published, but the main nonfiction list).

Fun Home took Alison 7 years to finish, as she painstakingly drew scenes from her life: she took reference from family photos and redrew each image by hand. The narrative itself is chock of literary allusions, as she frames her actual autobiography in fictional terms (she has said that she makes sense of her parents by viewing them as fictional characters).

I wanted a page that showed both Alison and her father, and page 23 is an interesting view of some of the many sides of her father - he is at once violently throwing a plate in a tantrum and then subsequently quietly reading to Alison as she goes to sleep.

The whole book is a coming out story - but two comings out, as Alison and her father struggle with their sexuality and place in a homophobic world. Ultimately, her father suffered a tragic end; Alison has turned their combined story into a masterpiece.

As electic as I am, I suppose. Really my gallery is anything I find interesting or memorable. Or anything that is a masterpiece, like Fun Home.

This page doesn't pass the Bechdel test, but it's such a great complex portrait of her father. You want to know if he was under stress financially, maritally, or at his job.
