DescriptionThis is the original preliminary pencil drawing for a piece entitled ‘Wright Again [4]’ that appeared in the April 26, 1950, issue of The Sketch. Interestingly, the finished piece is reversed from the original preliminary pencil drawing. Both pieces are featured on page 114 of Terry Parker’s book, ‘Sirens: The Pin-Up Art of David Wright’. But, even more interestingly, the model here is David Wright’s wife, Esme.Esme Wright (her maiden name was ‘Little’) was born in 1914 in Peckham, South London. She would come to meet David Wright via the Wright family studio where Wright began his career. As commercial fashion artists, the Wright Studio needed models, and Esme worked there in that capacity in the early 1930s. David was smitten with her, and they were married in 1936. Esme became his favorite model and would appear in many of his drawings and paintings over the course of their marriage. While David would pass at the age of 55 in 1967, Esme lived until July 1993, passing away at the age of 79. The Wright Studio, where David and Esme met and got their start, was very much a family affair – numerous aunts and uncles had emigrated south to London from Leeds in Yorkshire and were living communally in what amounted to a commercial studio in the form of a house, creating advertising art for fashion and consumer product brands. As an example of the talent in the home beyond David, Wright’s aunt, Louise Wright, was one of the country’s best-known fashion artists and introduced him to the world of fashion illustration. More to come on that in future postings. A final note about the ‘[4]’ designation in the title of this piece. Remember when I said Esme became his favorite model? Well, the [4] means it was the fourth in a series. Esme would be the model for a series of The Sketch pin-ups entitled with the Wright name from 1949 to 1950. ‘Just Wright’ encompassed five pin-ups from July to August 1949, ‘Wright Again’ included four pin-ups from February to April of 1950, and ‘Still Wright’ concluded matters with one pin-up in May 1950. Smooth! That braid lays perfectly over the back giving us another element to admire about this piece.

Her hair rendering is wonderful, as is the subtle glance over her shoulder and her facial expression!

I'll do some life drawing (I have skills) if you find me someone who looks like this.

Beautiful. I see a little Lauren Bacall.
Call me shallow. All I see is side boob and a pretty face.

Sensible lad. You bought a lady with bulges on her chest to add to the man with a bulge in his vest. Some wag might say that was the 'Wright' thing to do. Put them side by side and I know which bulges will come out on top.
