DescriptionAlthough it is often said that the first Blondie daily strip appeared on September 15, 1930, it actually began on September 8, 1930. Chic Young numbered each of the first six originals, which would always run first regardless of when a newspaper picked up the strip. After these six strips ran, a newspaper would then continue with the strip intended for the actual date of publication, even if weeks, months, or years of dailies had already appeared in other newspapers. Therefore, the first six strips appeared many times in many newspapers and would have been seen by more people than any other Blondie strips.25 Aug 2021: I have said in the past, based on what I was told by the prior owner when I bought the strip, that this original was given to Richard Marschall by Chic Young himself. I recently was looking through volume 22 of CFA-APA, which I knew had an interview of Marschall by Charlie Roberts from 1991 and which includes information about the early Blondies which Marschall once owned. At pages 6 - 7 of that interview, Marschall states that the first Blondie daily had belonged to a collector named Jack Herbert. In 1976, Marschall, along with Jerry Muller (a Southern California dealer who I knew well in later years -- in 1985 he sold me the first strip of the Blondie Hunger Strike sequence ghosted in 1933 by Alex Raymond) and Maurice Horn (who wrote one of standard and best books on comic strip artists), went together and bought the entire Herbert collection for $8,000, which Marschall says was a huge amount at the time. The buyers each got a portion of the collection, with Marschall taking the first Blondie and an early Polly and Her Pals Sunday. He didn't even know that it was the first when he took it as part of his share. He also said that Herbert had good taste and owned a great collection of comic strip originals, about 200 originals, most of which were good. The art was sold just as the prices for comic strip originals were starting to rise. Marschall thought that Muller got, among other pieces, a Flash Gordon Sunday, and Horn took a rare strip by Swinnerton, "Bears and Tigers." Herbert was selling one of two restaurants he owned plus his entire strip collection in order to buy an interest in the book publisher, Hastings House. But he never actually went through with his plan of buying into the publisher. So, Marschall wasn't the person who was given the strip by Chic Young, and I don't have any information on how Herbert came to own the Blondie. Social/Sharing |

I really love these early strips. What a shame that it has taken over 6 years just for someone who appreciates it to comment about it. If you ever decide to part with it, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know!

Amazing piece of history. The birth of a major piece of American pop culture.

How did I not notice this for all these years? Beyond the historical value of it, it's a great set of gags, and the pacing is oddball and wonderful. How weird to think of this set of characters going domestic. Terrific piece of work.

Amazing start to the strip. It seems like they swapped personalities over the years. History !!
