Description

There's a reason why this page sold for significantly more than any other (besides the splash) when ASM #31 was broken up at auction in 2006 - there's only one single page that introduces two of the most important characters in the title's history, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy. I confess that, when I re-read the old Lee/Ditko Spidey stories, I generally skip over the Spidey scenes and focus on the drama in Peter's life that made his character so sympathetic and relatable to generations; Peter's first day at Empire State University is more memorable to me than any of his early super-villain battles!

Both Gwen and Harry have, of course, appeared extensively in comics since 1965, both in the Marvel and Ultimate Marvel universes, as well as in the Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man film franchises. Between her portrayal by Bryce Dallas Howard (in Spider-Man 3) and by Emma Stone as Peter Parker's love interest in two subsequent Spidey films, as well as her star turn in the popular Spider-Gwen series (and in the critically-acclaimed 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Gwen Stacy in particular has become extremely popular with a whole new generation of comic book readers and film-goers alike. Harry Osborn (played by James Franco) also appeared in all three films of the original Spider-Man trilogy as well as in one of the subsequent films (played by Dane DeHaan).

Just a very memorable and important piece of the Spidey mythos!

As the owner of a non-Spidey ASM page myself, I'd like to say that your THREE historical pages show all the reasons we ever cared for poor old Peter Parker and therefore his alter-ego. In three incredible pages we get familial obligations, guilt, nerd-hood, school, failure, bullying and the seeds of future love. And that first panel of Gwen reminds me of Veronica Lake and has a quality similar to Wally Wood, yet still pure Ditko.

Gene, a truly classic, historic page! The genius that was Ditko! It is such a pity that Ditko chose not to cash in on his creation of the greatest superhero to ever see print since 1938 (the guy with the cape)!

Agreed on the mythos. And the importance. Great page!

I always preferred Gwen over MJ, so this one to my mind is just as important as the red-head's full appearance under Romita. The soap opera elements of the early ASM books under Ditko can frequently be more entertaining than the costumed exploits of Spidey. Terrific example!

Excellent page! I don't even care that there's no Spidey in costume! I love pages focusing on Peter's personal life.

The moody depth of feeling in the top tier is first-class Ditko ASM and is what set this title above all comers. Combine this with the introduction of 2 key players in the greatest comic melodrama of all time and you have something truly spectacular!
