Description

Nostalgia-rich page from the Buscema - Staton run on the Avengers. I like the somber mood of the page, with Staton's inks adding lots of texture.

I am pretty sure Romita re-did the female characters' faces on this issue, so until I hear news to the contrary I will attribute him as "finisher". Happy to hear suggestions on the right attribution.

A couple of non-OA related points. First of all, people often say that the main stream Marvel comics in the Bronze Age were a bit tired. Still Englehart was pushing the envelope here for 1974 standards, with complex love triangles and reluctant heroes.

"yet...am I happy Johnny?" carries a lot of resonance considering the future developments of the character.

Second observation: how many pages would it take today to tell the story (stories) crammed on this page? (I think at least 8-10 pages by Bendis standards...). Food for thought...

If I had to guess, I would say that the faces in panel 1, 5, and 7 have been re-touched. But again, that's just a guess.
