DescriptionOriginal cover art for Weird Science-Fantasy #29 (EC, June 1955) by Frank Frazetta. Originally conceived as a Buck Rogers cover for Famous Funnies, and drawn in 1954, Eastern Color deemed this cover too violent for the new comics code, and thus it was never published by them. Instead Bill Gaines’ EC Comics used it in 1955, but in a slightly altered form – helmet replaced by blond hair, and one of the attackers given more hair. It also holds the distinction of being the only EC cover that Gaines agreed to buy the rights to without owning the original art. Today, it is almost universally regarded as the most iconic Atomic Age (late 1940s through mid-to-late 1950s) comic cover. EC and comic art authority/publisher Russ Cochran famously called it “the most outstanding cover ever put on a comic book.”P.P.S. In answer to a recent comment, the size of the image itself is 14.5" x 22.25". Social/Sharing |

The problem is, Jim, that you're done. No, think about it -- there's nothing left. Go home. You win. Anything else you put up will just cringe and apologize for not being this cover. Can you look directly at this or do you just have to glance at it from an angle? Does it have its own room? I figure music must play when you get close to it, something by Wagner that Wagner composed, posthumously, while Frank was drawing it.

Words understandably fail to describe the singular majesty of this magnificent work of art, its undisputed position as the greatest comic cover of all time, and the intense collector interest in your acquisition of it. Bravo.

I've never posted twice about a single piece, but I had to come back again. THIS is what our "little hobby" is all about. I don't know how you're ever going to be able to wipe that grin off your face Jim. Nor should you.

This really does belong in a museum, preferably the Library of Congress, but congratulations on acquiring what may well be the single most desirable page of comic book art in existence. There is no up from here.

Any piece worthy of Scott Williams chiming in twice is worthy of me saying something at least once. Not sure I'm ready to say best cover ever, but this piece is absolutely gorgeous. Makes me miss 'the master' even more now that he's gone.

I had a chance to see this in person at the Geppi Museum opening several years ago. I took a photo with Frank next to it. That pic was the thrill of the night for me. I must say that the level of detail and fine touch that Frazetta employed on this piece is awe-inspiring. I have a feeling one day all of the owners of the major Frazetta pieces will be called upon to do an exhibit in a major museum. Probably sooner than later! Congratulations.

I remember reading somewhere that Frank did this overnight when he was ghosting for Al Capp. When this guy broke out the brushes, everyone has to stop and pay attention. It's a rare talent that can make the masses speechless. Frazetta could do it with a cup of coffee in his left hand, and a brush in his right. Nobody has a touch and line like Frazetta's!

The fact that Frazetta himself wanted to hang onto this beauty during his lifetime is a testament to it's greatness. Even beyond all the paintings to come later this one displays a high watermark for his talent.

I grew up dreaming of being a comic book artist. My two heroes were Neal Adams and Frank Frazetta. My Uncle took me to a science fiction art show at Kent State(?) back in the late 70s or early 80s, and they had original paintings by both Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta. Everyone but me was drooling over Boris' work. He is a master renderer, but Frazetta will always be the man for emotion, texture, action and power, in my opinion. This drawing is so beautiful, it makes my heart hurt. You must be so proud to be its owner.
