Yeah, I'll get to the art later, but first, let me tell you about this girl I liked when I was in university. It turned out that our families knew each other. She liked nerd stuff. She had huge... tracks of land. Furthermore, she was PERFECT. (Okay, she wasn't actually perfect, and it didn�t work out. Are you happy now? Sigh.)

One nerdy thing she liked that she got me to read was a book called Another Fine Myth by Robert Asprin. It chronicled the adventures of Skeeve, a hapless apprentice magician, and his "demonic" teacher, Aahz, a being from another dimension (aka a "demon") who has been stripped of his powers, as they battle an insane wizard who is determined to drain the world of magic. Sure, it sounds like a typical fantasy story, but the real reason to read the book (other than it would give me something to talk about with that girl I really liked) was its whimsical prose, an array of characters of varying degrees of silliness, and a remarkably liberal use of puns a la Terry Pratchett (according to his ex-wife, Lynn Abbey, Asprin died in his sleep in 2008 with a Pratchett novel still open in his hands).

Not long after I read the book (a paperback with no illustrations), I met Asprin at a convention in Atlanta and, after an interesting and quite lengthy conversation (the man was quite charismatic and funny) I bought, as a gift for the above-mentioned lovely lady, a complete autographed set of the Myth series (which was only three books at that time), all illustrated by an artist named Phil Foglio (I think the covers were done by Kelly Freas).

Later, the first novel was adapted by Foglio into a WaRP Graphics series called Myth Adventures in the mid-1980s. It was a ray of sunshine on the growing grim and gritty comic book landscape, as well as the kind of book that kept me reading comics as my interest in superheroes waned. It was also the first comic book work for both Foglio, and an inker by the name of Tim Sale. If memory serves, Foglio went on to draw humorous comics like Angel and the Ape for DC before going on to stuff like Xxxenophile and, more recently, online comics like Girl Genius. Sale, on the other hand, went on to draw... well, you know.

This page shows an action flashback sequence with our main protagonist's mentor, Garkin, going up against the vastly more powerful big bad wizard, but it still has hints of the humor and visual style that made this series a fun read back in the day. Also, and don�t tell the wife, it brings back memories of a certain someone, who, despite things not working out between us back in the day, still brings a smile to my face.

Super page, Timothy (and fantastic write up)! Yeah, there's just something about these Myth pages that is extra special, right? Undoubtedly the nostalgia, sure, but the huge size of them (Tim Sale once told me that Phil made the decision to switch to twice-up -after- Tim had signed all the paperwork to do it :) ), along with the crazy zipatone smorgasbord on pages like this and Tim's unmistakable lettering (to say nothing of watching Tim's cool thought experiment of grounding in reality some of the -very- cartoony elements of Phil Foglio's brilliance)... they're each just really, really special. Congrats on locking down a good one (poor Garkin)!
