Description

This is the title page to Big Steve King and Bernie Wrightson's adaptation of "Something to Tide You Over," the third tale from the movie and the fourth from the graphic novel adaptation of "Creepshow." It was the first of several collaborations Wrightson did with King, including illustrations for the novella "Cycle of the Werewolf" and a restored edition of his epic novel, "The Stand," among others.

The movie, directed by George Romero, was an homage from two masters of horror to anthology horror comics, with a particular nod to E.C.'s horror line. It is one of those 1980's-era horror movies that received mixed reviews from the critics at the time, but has aged quite well and is now considered something of a classic and/or a beloved cult film. I remember going to see it with a girlfriend and, at some point, (it may have been during "the Crate," but it was probably during "They're Creeping Up on You")she just got up and left the theater. Oops! Well, I had a good time.

From what I've read, getting Wrightson, "the master of the macabre," to do the tie-in adaptation was a stroke of both last-minute luck and sheer genius. He did the art in ink (with watercolors added by his then-wife, Michele) on a very thick piece of 13 X 17" bristol board, and it is pretty cool to see close up. (The dialogue was added on an overlay which, alas, was lost in both time and space before the page ended up in my hands.)

Wrightson starts things off at the top with a nice image of the Creeper, the host of the fictional comic in the movie, drowning in an ocean wave that also contains the story's title. He then kick-starts the adaptation with a large image of Harry, buried up to his neck in the sand, just beyond the reach of the incoming tide. This, to my mind, is an improvement on the movie, which wasted valuable time with an expository conversation (handled deftly on one of the following pages by Wrightson with a quick flashback scene) between the story's main antagonists, played by Ted Danson and Leslie Nielsen.

The two images are classic Wrightson (the bottom illustration, in particular, brings to mind, if only ever so slightly, "Mementos"). It is one of three similar images and layouts in that story. The second one is a killer. The third is probably the weakest of the three visually, but one of the upper panels contains what may well be the second-best line of dialogue in the entire movie (mainly because of the delivery by Nielsen).

This one crossed one of the biggies off my list. I've always wanted a nice Wrightson horror page, but his early 70s stuff and the later superior works he did for Warren have always been priced outside my comfort zone. However, while not a Swamp Thing page, this early collaboration with King (and Romero) was the right page at the right price at the right time and will do quite nicely. Thanks go out to Abe, who had bought it directly from Mr. Wrightson (and for sending me the nice scan, too), for the deal.

(The scan of the printed page was "borrowed" from a blog called Seduction of the Innocent.)

I don't have the book any more. I am guessing the movie dialogue would (approximately) match the bottom half, but the Creeper's dialogue in the top panel would be new. If I can find a cheap copy of the book or if there's a copy of the page floating around the web somewhere (or if somebody who does have a copy could send me a scan of the page), I'll post it later.

This scene in the movie has been engrained in my brain ever since I saw it as young teen. and it comes fresh to mind every time I visit a beach and see people 'bury' themselves for fun.
