DescriptionDuring the trip to Tokyo, I got sick the morning of the 2014 International Comic Book Festival and ended up in a hospital and missed the show itself. Two of the people I missed seeing the most were Philip Tan and his wife, who are, to put it as plainly as possible and with no exaggeration, two of the nicest people on earth. This year, things went a little better, though my wife would only let me go down for Sunday's main event rather than my usual 3-or-4-day Tokyo extravaganza. So this year, my helping out the international artists who work in the American comic book industry was limited to the show itself. This was somewhat disappointing to me as, usually, this trip entails taking the artists out to eat, helping them go shopping and site-seeing and getting to know them a little bit. Some of the artists (and their managers as well) have become friends. So, as I was helping the people in the international section of the festival's Artist Alley set up before the show got officially underway, Philip stopped by. He has been to all four festivals so far and so he knew I missed the show last year. The first thing he did was ask about my health and told me that he really missed seeing me last year. Then he surprised me with this gift, a Batman fully rendered on a Japanese "shikishi" art board. It's really amazing to see this thing in person. What good deed I did in this or a past life to receive such good karma, I cannot say. The only bad thing, was that Philip and his wife were set up in a different area and I never really got a chance to see him after that first meeting, which was greatly disappointing. Also, I'm not sure I properly conveyed just how grateful I was and how much it meant to me to receive this incredible gift of art (and a year's supply of gummi bears -- I believe they were meant to be more evenly distributed but somebody put them all in my bag to get them out of the way in the tight space we were all working in and well, so it goes). Wow! Terrifc Batman drawing by the amazing Philip Tan. Interesting that Philip focused on simply the Dark Knight's face peering through a latticework of leaves. But maybe that's enough. Philip gave Batman's face a grim, coldly menacing expression, gritting his teeth in anger. If he were a lion, he'd be about to growl. I love Philips inkwork here. The foliage is rendered roughly, more ink smudges than leaves. and the ink wash on his face and cowl give a strong sense of solidity and dimension. What a tremendous gift to receive from Philip. A true sign of friendship.
