DescriptionI am grateful for the various discussion threads on commissions as well as Rubén's excellent roundtable where this topic was also discussed extensively and which yielded many insights. This is yet another commission that was arranged by Felix. I felt strongly that Chris Stevens would do an excellent job drawing Steve Ditko and his most famous character, Spider-Man (yes, Ditko was one of the characters I decided to have in my commission). I also decided to go with color since Chris's color work is excellent. In my view, I think Chris knocked this particular commission out of the park. In addition to the marvellous linework, Chris's subtle use of colors for Ditko contrasts with the figure of Spidey. The detail is amazing - from Spidey's costume to the first page from AF 15 on Ditko's drawing board. Again, everything went smoothly because I had a great rep in Felix (thus avoiding all the unnecessary risk and angst which dominates conversations on commissions in the various threads and indeed in the show itself).Social/Sharing |

Outstanding commission. Love how much wonderful detail goes into these and the color just sends it over the top.

Thanks so much, Tyler. Yes, I am so glad that I went with a color commission.

Is this going to be a series of commissions honoring creators that you have in mind? Absolutely superb.

Many thanks, Jeff! It would be nice to do a series, but the opportunities for commissions are few and far between and I also take into account the artist concerned; for example, some are hugely talented but not likely to be able to pull something like this off.

Great idea for a commission! Chris nailed everything about it...the Ditko likeness is amazing and I love the color choices he made.

Wow, this certainly turned out wonderfully! When I first clicked on it, all I could see was Spidey from around the knees on up and I was already excited at how well he captured the Ditko-esque quirkiness in the figure. But as I began to scroll down and the image of the classic Ditko photograph revealed itself, I really let out an "OH, WOW!". The vast majority of the Chris Stevens pieces I've seen have impressed me, so it's no surprise that this one also turned out this well. Congratulations my friend, you really scored with this one. Oh, and Jeff's idea above, while I'm sure is NOT your intent, would certainly make for a great commission theme!

Many thanks, Rubén! However, it isn't easy nowadays to obtain a commission (this is the subject of Marcus's comment which I will also address in more detail). And as I mentioned, it really depends on the artist. Not every artist can pull this theme off well. I just felt that Chris's style was very appropriate but the problem will be getting on his list again.

Some guys have all the luck
Some guys feel all the pain
Some guys get all the breaks
Some can't do nothing but complain
A list in a crowd of Felix that he's taking, I'm dreaming
The CAB next to me has a grail in his arms, my arms are empty
How does it feel when the art next to you says Chris comes through?
Seems so unfair when there's Jones everywhere but wait years for me

Hi Marcus. I am getting the same feeling nowadays. It is almost impossible to get on the lists unless one happens to be at precisely the right place at the right time. This was commissioned sometime back when it was at least possible to succeed. I do believe, though, in patience, my friend, and will continue to persevere.
