Description

The importance of the latter issues of the original Stormwatch is often overlooked. They set the stage for writer Warren Ellis's Authority series, and it brought about a "widescreen," intense approach to super-hero comics that continues to play a major role in the genre today. So when I got a chance to pick this splash page up for a great price, I jumped at the chance.

It's interesting to compare penciller Tom Raney's style here to his art today. He's been most active in recent years at Marvel, and his linework is much cleaner and finely detailed as of late. This Stormwatch page features a rougher, rawer look, but then, that's in keeping with the harsher tone Ellis brought to the book.

To be honest, what I enjoy most about this page are the spatters of ink that Randy Elliott employs to convey the destruction to the ceiling and the gruesome massacre to the character in the middle of the page. The texture of the approach brings an almost-3D effect to the illustration.
