DescriptionWHOA.That's the only thing that came out of my mouth the first time I saw this piece. And I couldn't take my eyes off it. Three years after his outstanding, personal rendition of Mickey's Inferno, here's another true gem among Disney illustrations realized by Fabio Celoni, a piece titled "Paperons & Dragons" (that sounds like "Dungeons & Dragons", and was also mainly inspired by the stories created by Luciano Bottaro that are set in the Middle Age and known here in Italy as the "Paperingio" Cycle, a mix of the italian words for "Duck" and "Carolingian"). The subject was certainly not simple, having, in a Medieval setting, a huge dragon attacking Scrooge McDuck's castle and treasures (you know, dragons crave gold) and Donald Duck kind of trying to repel the flaming beast. Fabio imagined Donald was forced by his Uncle to face the dragon by using, as a threat, the usual "list of debts" (as we saw many times in Italian Disney stories), that here becomes the "Lista Debitorium" (mimicking Latin language). Also, a nice touch is having Brigitta McBridge (a character created by Romano Scarpa who is deeply in love with Scrooge) in the picture. Now, just take a look at the illustration. At first glance, you immediately realize how complex the composition is, where every single element is carefully placed in a sort of spiral structure (just like in "Mickey's Inferno") that constantly keeps your eyes on the picture, and how masterfully the use of perspective is employed. Then, you look closely, and you lose yourself going over all the tiniest details and the fabulous crosshatching work. Consider also that the illustration is huge (35 x 50 cm) and the scan cannot fully capture the sheer beauty of it. I also find in it something of the German engravings, amazing! Here's the original pencils (so beautiful that you almost wish he stopped there instead of taking his Winsor & Newton brush and ink bottle out), while in the additional images, some amazing close-ups. Huge thanks to Fabio, truly a Giant among Giants, both as an Artist and as a person. Paper size: 35 x 50 cm Social/Sharing |

Another spectacular Disney illustration. The large scan and detailed close ups are appreciated and really help get a better understanding of how great this must be in person. I hope it finds a spot on your wall as it deserves to be seen.
