DescriptionSky Masters was Wally Wood’s second foray into syndicated strips. He was thirty years old and well established as a professional artist, having created some incredible work in pretty much every genre – horror, science fiction, war, crime – working for the likes of Avon, DC, EC & Marvel.Given who he was at the time, and where he would head after this, it’s not exactly clear why Wood took the time to add the caliber of his inks to Jack Kirby’s pencils. But, he inked the first eight months of the 1958 – 1961 Sky Masters of the Space Force strip, written by Dave Wood and penciled by Kirby. I’m certainly glad he did - the power of their collaboration is clearly evident in this beautiful daily example from the strip. Sincere thanks to Mr. Gold for helping me understand how this one made its way to me. And, of course, sincere thanks to Thomas Ward for parting with it! Social/Sharing |

I'm so mesmerized by the background, I can't even look at the figures. Fabulous pick up, Chris!

Of all the Sky Masters that I had ever owned, this was always my favorite, glad it found its way to a good home!

When Roz started selling Sky Masters, I just happened to be there. I had the almost the entire run of Wood-inked dailies (minus the single-panel strips) to pick from. This was one of two strips I bought. It's truly outstanding.

What a great pairing of artists. It's my favorite "early" Kirby art, but that has as much to do with the Wood inks as it does with Kirby. Bravo!
