I had this idea a while back to have someone do a dual/mirror image piece featuring Kaine in his original look along with the SS one. I had seen some really nice commissions by Steven Butler on CAF and quickly thought he was the right man for the job. He had drawn a lot of the original Ben Reilly SS in Web of Spider-Man back in the day and was also the first to draw a published image of Kaine. Also, I hadn�t seen him draw a Kaine in his SS costume so that sealed it. And as you can see I definitely made the right choice! Rob Shalda here on CAF had a few of those nice Butler pieces so I asked him if he had Steven�s info. He did, I reached out, Steven took the job, and there you go - thanks, Rob!

This really came out great all around. I requested the mirror image but it was up to Steven on how he wanted to execute it. I like what he did because, along with clearly mirrored poses, you�ve got full shots of both Kaines. It�s also big, done on an 11x17 board. The ink job is killer, really dark and crisp. The capper is the webbed background where he uses some ink wash for the greyish effect - works well. I considered requesting full color but I thought I might lose some of that ink detail so I stuck with black and white only. Right decision, I think! I am still curious to see a colored version as I think it'd also look great so I may have a print-out colored at some point...we�ll see!

Steven Butler rocks. You made the right choice not to color it, I think. The ink job is indeed remarkable. Why none of the big two bring Butler back in the game is beyond me, his style is still very up-to-date (unless, I'm getting too old.)

Thanks, Nick, I am more affirmed now in my decision not to color it! Inks are striking. And I agree, wouldn't mind seeing Steven on some of these characters again - he's just so synonymous with Kaine/Scarlet Spider to me!

Two great characters from Spider-Man's 90s stories, done by an artist who knows them well. This is a great commission. Congratulations!

Thanks, man! 2 characters...but also one :) Butler drew Kaine a lot in the '90s so thought it would be cool for him to also draw Kaine when we became the Scarlet Spider! Still a fave commish - glad you like!
