DescriptionFrom the first moment I saw it, this cover blew me away. First of all, it's HUGE--A twice-up Silver Age cover with an image of 13.25" by 20.25"on a board of 15" by 21.25". The drawing of the Hulk seems to leap off the page. The original cover was penciled by Marie Severin and inked by Frank Giacoia, but as I understand it, the Marvel editors didn't like the way Severin drew Odin and the Asgardians so they had Jack Kirby redraw the Asgardians and the Rainbow Bridge on a separate board (with Syd Shores inking). They then combined the two parts using stats for the published version. This cover combines the original art from both artists. As Mike Burkey explained it to me, Severin's Hulk drawing was removed and professionally placed onto Kirby's background, creating this composite cover. It was beautifully done--the art now matches the printed cover perfectly. I've been told there's another version of this cover out there that combines Severin's original (rejected) Asgardian art with a stat of her Hulk, but this one has all the original elements. It's the real deal.BTW, this is the last issue of Tales to Astonish for a decade. The very next issue is titled The Incredible Hulk #102. Social/Sharing |

Really strong 3-D effect - I don't know what the initial asgardians looked like but these are darn cool!

Thanks to the additional images I can see the original Asgardians - your Kirby/Shores Asgardians are my preference!

How amazing, even when sometimes collecting can become overwhelming you see a piece like this and you understand why we sometimes agonize this wonderful world of comic art.

Classic Marvel magic—the Hulk running wild in Asgard, with such a great story title. Seeing this on the spinner racks must have made readers’ heads explode!

Love this cover. I remember seeking the back issue when I was a kid. Still think the transition of TTA and TOS was strange with Subby and IM getting #1's and Hulk getting #102 and Cap #100 was strange. Should have all been #1s!

I’ve always liked Severin’s Hulk. It has more humanity than Kirby’s or Trimpe’s. I’d be interested to see her original backgrounds to this one!

Yes, it simply "doesn't get any better than this" ! Superb art by those giants, always loved this cover and 2-part storyline ! Marie was the best female comic artist ever, her Submariner and Hulk versions are my all-tme favorites and Kirby on "his" thor stuff is the nearest thing to partying with the gods in Valhalla for all eternity, by Odin's bristling beard !

Just listen to Felix Comic Art Podcast Secret Stories of Comic Art. Albert Moy talked about this piece with the two backgrounds. Really neat to see the original Severin's background compared to the Kirby's background.
