DescriptionI'm a huge fan of Marvel Tales covers. Granted, it's a reprint book, but the covers are mostly new takes on old stories and are drawn by Marvel's top artists. This one, penciled by the uber-talented John Buscema and inked by the fabulous Frank Giacoia, features an all-out battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus and his minions. Sure, the story inside is a reprint of ASM #54, but the cover art is brand new! Buscema penciled an exciting, no-holds-barred battle with Spider-Man duking it out with a couple of thugs while the evil Doc Ock attempts to grab Spidey with his metallic tentacles. And, as a bonus, this issue is one of those "window pane" covers Marvel introduced around 1972, in which the cover drawing is framed by a border. What more could a guy ask for? I picked up a dynamic, action-packed Spider-Man cover featuring a major villain at a fraction of what it would have cost if the masthead read "Amazing Spider-Man." Sweeeet.Social/Sharing |

Bill the first thing you notice is that Border then your eyes are drawn to the characters contained within that border. They are a second away from crashing out and landing in your living room. Three times you mentioned objections that sometimes keep a collector from pouncing on greatness. "It's not out of ASM, blah blah blah." You my friend are the big winner because you put those objections under foot and based the acquisition on the quality and beauty of the art. Bravo my friend....stopped typing to give you a standing O...no kidding! Congratulations Bill.

That's a lovely cover, Bill. I can't help wondering what Ock did to Aunt May. :)

A Bronze Age gem, an all-time great legendary artist, and my favorite character with one of his most iconic arch villains. Now you're just showing off Bill. And you're killing me while you're doing it. LOL

Spidey vs Doc Ock, YES !! One of the biggest & longest running rivalries in Spidey lore. And what did Ock do to poor Aunt May? I need to know!

Marvel Tales was I think the first title I collected, and the early issues introduced me to a lot of silver age goodness.

Marvel Tales is often overlooked but the covers are all brand new depictions of the classic storylines. Who doesn't love a great Spidey vs Doc Ock cover drawn by Big John himself. Keep posting covers like this and we will have to call you Big Bill. Lol.

What can I say - Big John was the greatest draftsman in the history of comics since Lou Fine. John Buscema can draw anyone and anything better than most other artists. I remember this cover fondly since it was the 2nd Marvel Tales I ever bought off the newsstand back in 1972 as an 11 year old. Like most kids that grew up in the 1970s, our first back issues of Spider-man were from reading this title. The same with Marvel Greatest Comics for the Fantastic Four as well as Marvel Superheroes for Hulk and Sub-Mariner from TTA. A fabulous Bronze Age cover with Spidey vs: my favorite Spidey villain - Doc Ock!
