DescriptionFor defying Loki’s instructions to stay in Asgard and not aid Thor on Earth, the God of Mischief uses the power of the Odinring to punish Balder by transforming his face into an ugly visage. In a further demonstration of his power and authority over Asgard Loki creates a giant statue in his own honour, but no feat of his can bring fair Sif to love him.A smattering of Kirby crackle in the first panel is perhaps a nod to the King, but by this time Thor was already Big John Buscema’s character, and his brother Sal understood every line of his pencils. The twisted deformity of Balder’s new and hideous face is shocking and each character’s pose conveys the story. In many ways, the real action was back on Earth with Thor and the Silver Surfer struggling against Durok the Destroyer, but with the Buscemas every scene is utterly gripping. Social/Sharing |
