Description

The Killdozer, seen in this page for the first time, was Judge Dredd’s means of travelling ‘safely’ across the Cursed Earth from Mega City One, to deliver a vaccine to Mega City 2. Dredd clearly did not share Judge McArthur’s overexcitement for the vehicle’s “Kill Power”, but the device and its weaponry explode from the page. The blasts on the left are cut out to overlap the strip’s logo, to emphasise that power.

As a ten year old reading 2000AD, McMahon’s bold and jagged lines always stood out – a warning perhaps of the shocking, gritty adventure to come. At a convention, my brother and I met Mike McMahon and he kindly signed some of our pages. We asked him how he managed to produce these bold and vibrant images, the characters with blocky edges jumping out of the page. Without hesitation he told us, “I bought cheap pens in bulk and I couldn’t draw”. Obviously, we couldn’t agree with that blunt and harsh self-criticism. Whatever McMahon thought of his early work, he was from the start, and remains, a towering figure in British comic art.

What a fantastic page! All the raw energy of McMahon's art and the early Dredd strip in one explosive DPS. And some humour from McArthur and Dredd's exchange. Perfection.

An amazing piece of artwork - a joy to behold! Mick's early work is always a treat to see and this page is an absolute gem.
