Description

Original art that has had a few miles on it. Artist Lee Elias originally pencilled and inked this page for the Fiction House title, Rangers Comics #26 (page 3) in December 1945.

It was reprinted in another of their titles, Firehair #2 (page 5) in the Winter 1949-1950 issue. By then the move towards a Comics Code was forcing publishers to reevaluate their content. So this original art was altered before the second publication of the work.

Whiteout indicates where the heroine's costume was adapted to remove the original low neckline. The violence of the murdered Native American is diminished as well. Notation on the page instructs, "In panel 4 have the guy holding the gun by the barrel as though just socked Indian. No smoke."

The word balloons were changed too. In panel 3 the word "gunshot" is replaced with "yells". In panel 4 adapted to support that no one was killed.

Absolutely love the history of this piece.

Early Elias is great stuff. Serious cartooning. And the mileage endows the page with character.
