Description

This is a definitive Astro City page in my opinion.

Going on 25 years now, Astro City is a love letter to superhero comics. The first two volumes are still the most classic stories introducing analogues to Superman, The Fantastic Four, Captain America, Batman and Robin, and Spider-Man.

This page is from the first appearance of Jack In the Box, the stand in for Spider-Man. The character designs by Alex Ross are pitch perfect in their uniqueness while instantly invoking their silver age counterparts.

The left panel highlights Brent Anderson�s kinetic energy while giving an ideal image of Jack In the Box. Throughout the page you see the criminals reaction to him, which is the crux of Astro City�s magic.

As a bonus, I think that�s writer Kurt Busiek depicted as one of the bar patrons.

Nice early page in the first series. Anderson really gave Busiek's man on the street stories a lot of realism and nods to era's in comics past. The first person styled self contained issues gave us a day in the life of heroes and regular people affected by the battle of good and evil as they saw it. Astro City 3 was the Spidey issue and Busiek really connected with the character and audience.
