DescriptionMy collection was sorely missing more Deathlok so to start I’m remedying that with this early ‘90s beaut by Cowan and Manley!I was a preteen in 1991 when Deathlok came out, living in rural northern AZ. No access to a comic shop so I relied on the 7-11 spinner rack for my fix. They didn’t have a ton of books but I remember them always having the newest Marvel #1’s, and they’d carry those series for a while. And I always had to try and pick ‘em up, with what little money I had. And I got my money’s worth, too- those comics got WORN out. Sleepwalker, Darkhawk, to name a few, and yes, Deathlok! And remember all them crossovers?! Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Punisher…everyone was everywhere :) I remember thinking how different the Deathlok book looked – wasn’t sure if I really liked it as first. But it quickly grew on me. The more angular, scratchy, kind of inexact style was perfect for the gritty character. Case in point... Deathlok vs. Mechadoom! The latter was intended to be a new version of Doombot but was decommissioned before completion, but it gained sentience and finished itself anyway. Of course. Enter the Michael Collins version (my intro to the Deathlok cyborg) of the Demolisher! Every panel’s got something to see. Hero vs villain, gunshots, those 2 splashy panels at the bottom, AND some great dialogue with Michael conversing with his onboard computer, ending with “Recommend rifle-based deployment of plasma grenade to maximize odds of total target destruction”. “CHAK”. LOVE that last close up lock-and-load panel. And all on a big 13x19 board! Hope y’all dig it. And there’s more Deathlok comin’! Social/Sharing |

Heavy metal action! Mechanical melee of modern age magnificense. Servos, gears, struts and chassis will be mangled and lost like pieces of lego. Cowan's artwork controls flow of traffic and quality of line to manufacture a stunning comic page.

Yeah boi!!!!!! Such a great page and storyline too. Mechadoom is my favorite pick for a character that needs to come back.

Yeah, man, they could do some real MU damage with this bot. I remember thinking Mechadoom and another bad guy of the time, Cameron Hodge in X-Tinction Agenda, having a similar scary design. The more we see' em in the books the better IMO. Thanks, M, and all, for the comments!

Holy crappola, you get the best/most representative examples of beloved characters! Computer voice = crazy nostalgia. Just blasting away... grew to admire Deathlok in the Maximum Carnage arc, and he doesn't disappoint here. Congratz !!

I love seeing Cowan's original art, but I'd really love to know what's going on with that little smoking guy in the top right-hand corner.

I wondered about that myself. I'll have to ask Cowan whenever I see him. I bet he remembers clearly what he drew that for. Fun stuff, those sketches on the borders/back of boards that may or may not have to do anything with what's going on in the published OA. Thanks for the add, Michael!

Wow, what an outstanding Deathlok example! Those last two panels are such money shots!! And yes, I DO remember how EVERYONE was appearing in everyone else's books in the '90s. Crossovers galore! Good times for sure ... And great get here, K!

Cowan is someone whose art surprised me the first time I saw it. I wasn't sure if I liked it, but also knew that I didn't hate it. I warmed up to it quickly though and have been a fan ever since. Years later, he used to work down the hall from me and was a very nice guy too. Congrats on picking this up!

Congrats on another piece to the collection, great to add a Cowan piece. Deathlok wasn't a character I folllowed much, too many mutants to chase, but when he came into the X Universe, especially in X-Force, he was definitely a fun add on.

If I had a nickel for every decommissioned Doombot that gained sentience and finished its own construction...SHEESH! Don't you just love comic conceits like broadcast microwave power that allow the baddie to reconstruct? It's so Kirby-esque, like OMACs computerized digital surgery when he transforms. Love it. Oh, yeah, and Deathok! All of us collectors of a certain age (sorry :) love that murder cyborg. His back and forth with the computer in his brain is fantastic. Great find. Congrats!

I love 1991! I was also a preteen getting to choose my own comics, which back then, also growing up in a small town, meant they were only available at liquor stores and drug stores. Without any idea about Marvel history, I thought Michael Collins was the first and only Deathlok. Same with Ghost Rider. Deathlok was a bad ass character! Like Kent Mansley writes, I didn't love Cowan's art, but I didn't hate it either. I've grown appreciate it more over the years and feel it's fitting for its technonightmare environment. It was fresh, too; still nascent 90s that later become the housestyle. Great example!

Yeah, exactly! Collins was the only Deathlok I knew. I did have some knowledge of the original GR, but learned a lot more literally the same month Deathlok 1 came out - a book called The Original Ghost Rider Rides Again, reprinting a run of some of the original Johnny Blaze stories came out, too. July 1991! Good point on Cowan's style really fitting the "technonightmare environment" - totally agree. And his art style influence definitely grew later. Thanks, John!

Incredible line work here. So dynamic and edgy. I’m also at a point where Deathlok needs a place in my gallery!

Outstanding page, K! This must be absolutely spectacular at 13 x 19, too. And you can see exactly why/how Cowan's awesome, "scratchy" style is a match made in heaven when Sienkiewicz inks him... This "pre-Bill" page feels like destiny rumbling, mech-like, towards us, crushing everything in its path. I LOVE those last two panels especially (but as you correctly point out, there's lots to love everywhere here), and as I was reading more Indy comics than Marvel comics in the early 90's, this has a Keith Giffen 'Trencher' vibe to me, with that crazy over-the-top action that exploded off of almost every page of mainstream comics of the time... Great, GREAT energy to the page; what a barn-burner! Another sterling addition to your mighty collection, K! Sincere congrats, pal!

What a spectacular example from this series! Every panel a winner, especially the 4th one. I also have to give props to Mike Manley because while Sienkiewicz is my favourite inker over Cowan, Manley did a fabulous job here!
