Description

Being the Guardian of the Nexus of Reality seems to have its ups and downs for our erstwhile protagonist, but certainly it leads to meeting all sorts of interesting people. On this occasion, in “Red Sails at 40,000 Feet”, the Man-Thing first meets oceanographer Dr Maura Spinner after he stows away on board the ship she has chartered for her study of the Bermuda Triangle. What could possibly go wrong? After persuading the crew not to throw the Man-Thing overboard, as she deems it worthy of study, the boat reaches the Bermuda Triangle and is attacked by a flying ghost ship, the Serpent’s crown. This leads the Man-Thing to also meet the delightful undead pirate, Captain Fate, and his equally undead crew. Maura turns out to be the reincarnation of the pirates’ Queen, the key to ending the pirates’ curse of undeath, and the dormant bog creature they thought subdued when they hauled in on board is eventually revived by Maura’s screams. Oops. (Unkillable pirate zombies on board a ghost ship, on a quest to lift their curse – hmm, I wonder where Pirates of the Caribbean got that idea from… nah!)

This story is just perfect for Tom Sutton, working over John Buscema’s superbly dynamic layouts to produce a miasma of roiling sea, the swirling upper atmosphere as the ship heads into space, and undead rotting flesh. The whole page writhes before the horrified reader.

The inking by Sutton really pushes Buscema's ideas and caricatures to the fore.  He did not skimp on any detail and gave it the feel of mystery and fear with Buscema providing plenty of extraordinary images.

Really love that moody second panel, and wow, that close-up of Captain Fate in the 5th panel ... that is a face only a mother could love.  And then you get a great shot of Man-Thing at the end.  Bravo!

Man-Thing, Undead pirates, and curses, oh my...I really dig the atmosphere of this page. Things get pretty weird for the protector of the Nexus of Reality, and it makes for really fun pages like this. Panel 5 is a perfect mix of Buscema and Sutton's style, imo. Really awesome find. Congrats!

Here's an example of everyone working at a high level to bring one of Steve Gerber's delightfully demented ideas to life. It's a perfect slice of history... I can't think of any other comics that are quite like it!

What a fabulous page with both John and Tom's styles coming through in this terrific collaboration. It's another great addition to your collection!

Great combination between two awesome artists. Tom delivered a lot of books by himself and here, with John, he did a great job by enhancing those probably loose pencils which traced the page but needed to be filled with something more. Sutton was always respectful with the original penciller as he already showed with Kane but was able to add this specific atmosphere of his own. He was great on these horror books. Like we can see in his Man Thing book in Giant Size #5 and here with John in this especially beautiful page. Congratulations Paul, another winner in you superb collection...
