Description

Cover dated July 1987. Signed by writer Roy Thomas.

I was late to the party for Infinity Inc., but then I was late to the party when it came to pretty much everything DC in the 1980s. When I started buying comic books in the mid-1980s, it was popular among the neighborhood kids to declare your allegiance to one comic book company and only buy from that company. Marvel was what got me started in comics thanks to such licensed properties as Star Wars, Transformers and G.I. Joe, so I was squarely in the Marvel camp. The 1989 Batman movie is what led my friends and me to dip our toes into the DC water, and we were swimming in the deep end in the blink of an eye.

I accumulated somewhere in the realm of 600-700 DC comic books during that 1989-1990 period. If you’re wondering how a 13 year-old kid with a limited budget was able to do that, the answer is Mike’s Comic Hut in Flushing, Queens. Mike’s was the best store I’ve ever visited for a variety of reasons, but for now we’ll focus on its discount bins. I once went in there in 1990 with $20 and left with 200 1980s DC comic books, including issues of Legion of Super-Heroes, New Teen Titans, Ambush Bug and All-Star Squadron. I bought more than half of the Infinity Inc. series in another visit for between a quarter and fifty cents per book. I fell in love with everything Roy Thomas wrote for DC in the 1980s thanks in no small part to Mike’s, and I had the complete series of All-Star Squadron and Infinity Inc. by 1991 thanks to Mike’s and a few other stores (Todd McFarlane being the artist on Infinity Inc. for a run meant spending up to cover price to get a few of those issues).

Infinity Inc. is still one of my all-time favorite series, and I’ve enjoyed seeing characters from that book in the current Stargirl TV show. This page (which is oversized) is from Vince Argondezzi’s first issue on the book. Tony DeZuniga and Danny Bulanadi are the credited inkers, but the book doesn’t say who did what. If you examine the issue, there’s clearly two different inking styles at play, and I think it’s safe to say that DeZuniga worked on this page. If you’re reading this and think differently, let me know.

Argondezzi had a tough act to follow as McFarlane had just recently left the title. He and DeZuniga did a great job conveying Obsidian’s power, and the overall layout of the page showed that they were looking to do something akin to the unusual layout style that McFarlane had popularized on the book before them.

The big skull is wonderfully designed!  These prestige direct market comics were harder to collect if you didn't have the store.

I was mostly a Marvel guy in those days too, though I did also collect the 2 Batman titles, Flash and sometimes tried out different random issues of JLA, Green Lantern and other DC titles. I always WANTED to try Infinity Inc and All-Star Squadron, but I just didn't have the money to. All these years later, on a friend's advice, I've gotten into the JSA and Stars and STRIPE by Geoff Johns during the past 6 months and have really been enjoying it. I would LOVE to be able to get the entire Infinity Inc. series in trades so I can finally read them! Anyway, I love Obsidian so any pages that feature him are always fun to see. Fun page!

They put out one Infinity Inc. collection back in 2011 and solicited a second one, but the second collection got cancelled before release (I'm guessing because sales of the first collection were lower than anticipated).  If you don't mind reading comics digitally, the DC Universe Infinite app has the complete Infinity Inc. series on it (along with All-Star Squadron).

Great page, Michael (and as Marcus said, the skull on the top half of the page is wicked cool.  God bless Mike's and the all the other shops from our youths that had longboxes full of treasures to be had for pocket change.  I found a local flea market that had Wrightson Swamp Things and Kaluta Shadows for a quarter each, and made sure to tell my friends so we could all enjoy the art and stories.  Having a place that provides fun childhood memories like that is a treasure in and of itself.  Great art and write up!

Great page! I loved reading about the sons and daughters of the JSA. Infinity Inc has a special place in my heart as it was the first title I bought and read regularly outside of GI Joe. Everything I read afterwards was because of Infinity Inc. Still my favorite group by far.
